anyone know exactly what it does. I have always been curious and never could find a specific answer.

The fuel rack position sensor talks to the EGR electronics, telling it how much fuel is going into the engine via the IP. If you have EGR disabled on an OM617, the only thing the EGR electronics does is process the engine rpm signal and send it along to the tachometer. The EGR electronics must stay connected or the tach won't work but the rack position sensor is irrelevant with EGR disabled.

AFAIK, the only cars that have this setup are the 1985 300D-T and the 1985 300SD. I have never completely understood what Mercedes did in the 1984-85 time frame and the 1984 California cars may also have had this setup.

The early OM603 engine (in the 1987 300D Turbo) has a very similar setup except that the EGR electronics has "evolved" (if that is the correct word) into the Electronic Diesel System (EDS) and also does an electronic idle speed control of the IP. EDS must be connected for the electronic idle and the tach to work.

Even my '98 injsection pump has the exact same type of sensor except in it's application, it's critical to maintaining idle speed and other parameters.
