What's this hanging from below my car?

Car: 1984 300TD Euro

What's this?! Looks like a tine primary fuel filter. Should it be connected to something?

It looks like the 90 degree inline fuel filter most of our engines have..
if you replace it most recommend getting the clear one so that algae can be seen if that develops....

Vent valve. Comes from the expansion tank (which is next to the spare tire).

So is this something that requires maintenance? Should I replace it? I never have. Owned the car for about 8 months now.

If that was a fuel filter and it's been hanging under his car while driving, I don't see how he was getting fuel up to the engine...

It's not supposed to hang down. It's to allow pressure relief of the expansion tank.

I think it's supposed to be clamped down to the undercarriage somewhere. Let me go look.

I said it looked like the 90 degree we use for fuel..... and it still does... Why would it need to be hanging that low ? Out here in the country that is an invitation to a mouse...
I did not assume the car was functioning with a fuel line filter in that position...

It's a vent valve. Maybe missing a bell housing shaped thing, maybe missing a stub of line. No maintenance required normally, but if it's hanging low or missing some protective collar it raises the probability of a fuel tank overpressure due to a clogged or broken valve.

Didn't you just post about a leak or puddle in a wheel well? The two items might be related, or maybe just pure coincidence.

Wait for andrewj's reply since he's got a wagon and they've got different tank layouts.

Ok, It's too damn hot to get under my car. I can't get you a pic of where it's supposed to be mounted. But Yak is right, it's supposed to have a horn/bell attachment on the open end of the valve.
