Hypothetical question regarding the OM617

So say I wanted to upgrade to a turbodiesel engine in Norm, but was unable to find a wagon 617. Are the heads the same between the non-turbo and turbo 617's? Or more specifically, can I put the current head on my NA engine on a turbodiesel engine?

I have no plans to do this, just wondering out loud.

Heads are not the same. Valves are sodium filled in the turbo engines. Maybe the sodium valves can be retrofitted to an NA head.

^stuff like that I'm not worried about, I'm just wondering if the head itself is adaptable.

Like I said I have no plans on doing this, but I'm fearing that Norms engine is getting a little tired. I'm going to drive it until it dies though.

The heads are different, as has been noted. You would have to restrict the boost, which would mean the whole exercise would be of limited value.

If you are patient, wagon engines -- or heads that you can put onto another OM617 -- do turn up from time to time. At one point (not recently) there were two on eBay at the same time, very weird.

Castings are the same. Same part number. As noted above valve train is different, but you can have the head fitted with the correct valve train.

I think it would be worth digging into the EPC to root out all the differences. If only valves and camshafts are different in the heads, then you could keep your head and the problem of sourcing a used turbo engine is much easier. I would imagine that most of the differences have to do with dealing with the extra heat from the turbo engine.

Alternatively, back-fit the the dual power steering pump from an OM60x engine to a OM617.95x engine that doesn't have the SLS pump head.

Interesting, Not that theres anything wrong with my SLS system, just curious, have you done this? That sounds like the answer to a much debated question around here.

My engine has started to make this noise, is why I'm asking:

http://youtu.be/HERn24PKzYI

And trust me I've replaced a lot of parts in an attempt to hunt it down. I'm fearing it's an internal issue.

Do the turbo OM617 blocks have an oil spray to cool the pistons that the NA versions lack?

What noise? Hard to tell anything wrong from the video, if anything it sounds almost like a bearing beginning to go (alternator, WP, etc) but otherwise seemed normal to me.

yes. along with several other changes.
the turbo engine has the turbo oil return in the pan, and a higher volume oil pump that's chain driven instead of shaft driven, the piston squirters as well.

It's not, listen between 30-33 seconds. That's the noise I'm hearing, and the video doesn't really pick it up very well. Joe has heard it. I've replaced the water pump and alternator within the last month already, so it's neither of those.

Trust me I considered it, but I think driving it until it explodes is at the point I'm at now (with a spare ready to go if/when it happens).
