Looking at 83 240D tomorrow

Hi All,
I'm spending some time with a 83 240D (176K miles) tomorrow with a "bad" transmission and might buy it if the price is right. The body is solid- it's sat for approx a year- 6 months ago when I looked at it - it started right up. The reason for "bad" being in quotes I'm not certain the tranny is toast and I'm hoping for some insight. It's an auto- when you put it into any gear - you can feel the transmission move but it doesn't engage in any gear. Transmission fluid level is good and doesn't smell burnt. Could this be as simple as a vacuum issue? What about the engine sitting so long without running?
Thanks for your help!!

Sounds like a B2 piston issue, prolly a bad seal. I wouldnt worry about the motor sitting, a year isnt to bad.

take a look

If it started right up then there is no problem with it having sat for that long... my 81 wagon sat for 18 months and started immediately ... with the old fuel ... and TxBill drove it for several years after that...

Mine sat outside for 2 years before I bought it.... Now it's my DD. I've put almost 3k miles on it in the past 3 months.

Sort of echoing the others but if it started like that after sitting, I suggest you go for it and solve the tranny problem after. Even if worst comes to worst, and it may well not, a used tranny for that car is a hell of a lot easier to find than a decent used motor, voice of experience here.

Your location isn't showing in your info. If you are in the northeast... and/or if it was sitting on grass or swampy ground, make sure the floor or rockers haven't taken a hit from moisture, that's all. You need to check from under the car, you can't tell from pulling up the floor mats.

Thanks everybody for the replies! I'll update what I find tomorrow with pics. As far as the B2 piston that doesn't look like it's a big deal. Fingers crossed and hope that's it!
