Well, work has started on this. I decided to include a couple of other projects to run in tandem with it while I had the help of a real good friend.

Where's David Copperfield when you need him? We could have used him to levitate this engine/trans out for us... hehe

One question, I still need to know about re-pinning the harness on the rear of the IP. The 300SDL was 3 wires, and the 350SDL has 4 wires. Any ideas? Or should I just use a multimeter to track it down?

Thanks.

Can we clarify what has 3 pins vs 4 pins? The ELR, which is what I have in mind as behind the IP, only has 2 wires.

I believe it is the ELR. I know it has 2 pins, but I thought I saw 3 wires in the harness to it. I could be mistaken. My only 100% together 300SDL my wife drove to work, so I cant say for sure.

Maybe you're looking at a connector for the cruise control actuator or the aux fan temp switch.

Could be. It's great to have an unmolested car to drive out there as a reference to reassemble everything with though.

That could be the case, the sensor (not a switch) on the 3.5 is only a 2 pole plug.

Hey Sixto, here's the pic of the harness plug on the 87 300SDL. This is the rear most harness on the IP. The 2 pins stick straight up. Notice while there are 2 pins, there are 3 wires. Also, I'm gambling your ID may have to do with the GM Detroit 6.2L diesel engine. Check this video link. It's another simultaneous project. Last model year R/V body crew cab dually decked out with loads of custom stuff. Had a 454 gas drivetrain. Was TOO expensive that way, so I decided it needed to be repowered. It's not quite finished, but it's close. No exhaust yet, this is straight off the manifolds, no down pipes either. Enjoy!

Is there a question or are you good with the 350 connector on the 300 ELR?

Sixto is my name, d@mmit!!! Besides, my 'burb has a 6.5 td, not a 6.2 And it sounds just like that with a full factory exhaust when cold. My neighbors will confirm whenever I have to leave before 6am.

I havent confirmed that the 350SDL has 4 wires, but more than one person has said it does. I need to verify that it has the same number of wires.

Sweet on the Burb. Mechanically, I've finished my 3/4 ton 4x4 TD 1995 Burb, but needs paint. This is it. Glad to hear you have one also.

OK, I decided to put a replacement engine into a 300SDL because I have an offer on it. So, before I put the engine in the 350SDL for myself, I hopefully can make a few bucks on this car since I'm currently between jobs. Anyway, the car had no real issues when the engine was removed, but with the replacement engine installed, the shifter is WAY off. When the old engine was being removed, we did hangup on the shifter linkage. Obviously, enough to bend it somehow. The rod underneath looks straight, so I'm assuming it's bent somewhere above closer to the cabin area. Any ideas what would first distort in the shift linkage when the shift rod is pulled forward? The only other issue I can say exists is the glow plug light is not working. I'll need to figure that out. I left the relay in the car, and used the GP harness attached to the engine. So, I'm thinking it's somewhere on the engine side since that's the new portion as far as the car is concerned. The engine harness was also left in the car. Oh, and the headlights seem to pulse like a bad alternator, or a bad ground somewhere.

It's late, and I'm rambling. I'll address these tomorrow. But I did need a possible lead on the shift linkage. As to where the weakest link is that would have been compromised when the shift rod got pulled forward unnaturally.

The ends of the shift rod and their attachments should be on the same plane. Is the bell crank true to the axis of the shaft it attaches to on the transmission? Is the attachment point at the bottom of the shift lever true to the bell crank? If everything's true and the shift rod isn't bent, there might be several positions in the bell crank on the transmission. Are you sure you're connecting to the right one? Are you sure the transmission and shift lever were in the same position when you attached the shift rod? IIRC the bell crank should be fully CW when viewed from the driver side of the car when the transmission is in park.

The glow relay has 2 connectors besides the main red wire for power. The 6-pin connector goes to the glow plugs. The 4-pin connector is everything else - the brown wire is ground, the pink wire with black stripe is the preglow start signal (+12V to the relay with key in run), the violet wire is the preglow stop signal (+12V to the relay with key in start), and the black wire is the glow indicator signal (+12V to the glow indicator). Is the 80 amp strip fuse intact?

uh....if your 3.5 is in good running condition why replace it? It may never bend a rod...I'd just stash away the 3.0 for a rainy day...

or am I missing something in this thread?

I plan on using this 350 for quite a while, and while I'm in between jobs, I'm using this time to get alot of projects done. The 350 will be used heavily from Roanoke VA, to Atlanta GA in my next job, and I wont have time with that job to swap engines if case this one starts going downhill. I'll need to depend on it. And this 300SDL engine has well under 100k on it. Plus, the 350's I've seen with the potential rod bender replaced with a 3.0L seem to sell much better and for a better price. Kind of the best of both worlds, last generation w126 fitted with a powerplant with a much less marred past. If I run into a situation with work (or lack of) that I have to sell it, it should be easier to sell.

The lower shift rod that attaches to the transmission looks straight. If I choose another spot on the trans to attach it, the problem will be worse. I'm about one position off. Reverse is roughly neutral for example. I may have bent the linkage that the transmission rod attaches to. That seems like what happened. I'll have to check it out. As far as the glow plugs go, I left the relay as it sat. I did remove the engine side plug from the relay, but that was it. That's why I'm confused as to what could have changed. I guess the harness on the engine could have a fault in it, but would a fault on the engine side cause the relay not to work? The strip fuse is intact. I'll go over it with a test light and make sure I have power coming into the relay.
