AC guage answer needed fast

Why are these listed as R134a ONLY ?

http://www.harborfreight.com/a-c-manifold-gauge-set-92649.html

they look to have the regular fittings on the end of the hoses..

then for R134a they have the adapters...

possibly some not so AC informed copy writer ?

anyone have these and use them for R12 ?

or see what I am missing as to why they are ONLY r134a ?

One of our members is poised to head into New York City and pick these up while on sale...

Please address the specific questions in this thread if you are going to try to answer it...

thanks
Greg

That has to be the case. No reason they would not work for R-12/R-22. You can even see the multiple temp scales (for different refrigerants) on the gauges.

Thank You.
Hated to point a member working under hardship ( New York on the curb until he finds a garage to rent for this project ) and it be the wrong gauges... even if they are on SALE.... LOL

Harbor Freight gauges might not be a bargain at any price.

Some things are great bargains from them.. sometimes not...
my 14 inch bandsaw was great out of the box and hundreds less than the competition... did not even have to track the blade when setting up... I was amazed...

Here is an interesting discussion on that...

I have a set of those gauges (actually 2 sets) and they will not work for R12. The fittings have a courser thread than those on a Shraeder valve and won't fit. There are multiple scales on the gauges but none are labeled R12. I have a separate set of R12 hoses and gauges.

the charging hose is 1/2" fp instead of the 1/4" flare... will not attach to a charging bottle.

ooooops! What HF return policy? ha

leathermang 06-08-2011 01:12 PM

Ok thanks guys....

Any chance just proper fitting hoses/ends can be added to this set of gauges ?

leathermang 06-08-2011 03:47 PM

Ok.. Thanks to Jim for this Ebay item..

http://cgi.ebay.com/R12-R134a-Flex-Hose-Adapter-Set-Use-w-R134a-Gauges-/150615707433?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clki d%3D507810025010540124

Anyone think or know that that would accomplish what we are after?

When I got the r12s, the guy also gave me one of those "u charge" hoses. Look at the picture. At the end of it there's an adapter. I wonder if that adapter is a 134a to r12. Does it look like it? I don't want to open the gauges and try it out, if I'm going to return them. RELAX... I'm not going to charge my car up with that hose...

leathermang 06-08-2011 03:56 PM

Can't tell from pics.. you are going to use gauge set to charge anyway... return the r134a set and check pm's...

No, it's not. That's an R-12 adapter for certain vehicles which have a different size fitting on the high and low side service ports.
