best way to remove a damaged trunk lock

of course the trunk is closed...
84 300D

Just picked up this car for a neighbor to drive.
on the way there (3+hour drive...) I call when I'm close, and the seller says he's got a problem. he dropped the key in the trunk when he was closing it... took a screwdriver and a hammer to the key hole trying to get into the trunk... I told him to STOP key in the trunk is no problem... damaged button IS!!!
when I got there the keyhole was massively buggered, no damage to the trunk itself, but MAN what a mess this moron made of the button.
I whip out my leatherman, take out the two screws in the first aid bin, and have the key in my hand in about 30 seconds...
arrgh.
anyway, what's the best way to get the trunk open, and then to remove the lock assembly to get a replacement in there?

Can you shove your neighbor through the hole to release it from the inside?

the thought did cross my mind...
I have several other cars to play with, what's the trick to open it from the inside.
I have the cover off the vacuum lock cover, but if it's locked with the key, that won't help.
how do you actually pop the trunk from the inside?

Ok..
This is the definitive way to remove it coming from the front of the car...
Pull the engine, cut out the floor boards , remove the front seats, remove the back seats, drain the fuel tank and cut it into pieces to remove, crawl into trunk and flip that little lever that opens the trunk..
Fix is just reversing this process....

Oh dear John!!
Is it possible to grind the key barrel away & force it to turn or go in through the hole? What prevents the outer of the key barrel from turning?
I am just brainstorming.

Wasn't there someone who had a procedure that involved sticking a pole through the first aid bin hole and tickling some part of the lock mechanism to release the trunk? I seem to recall seeing that written up in a thread here somewhere? Ahh, here it is:
