Hey all,

I found a car for sale for $500.00. It's an 85 300TD.

The seller says the turbo doesn't work and the car goes really slowly up hills.

The mileage is 360k.

Comes with a set of studded snow tires used 1 season.

What does everyone think?

It's about an hours drive away and I'm worried it might not make it home without the turbo.

How do the TD engines run when the turbo is shot? How much are new turbos?

The seller may not understand the issue. It's entirely possible the ALDA line from the manifold is completely blocked, thus the turbo won't provide a signal to the IP.

A proper diagnoses is key. Does the turbo spin at all? Are the lines hooked up properly?

If the turbo does spin, check by hand, it'll be fine to drive it, just slow.

If the turbo spins, it wins.

You can take the U tube off to check it. Spinning it by hand with the engine off can let you feel if there is any resistance to turning possibly indicating a bad bearing. Start the car (be careful not to let anything into the intake - no dust no dirt) and observe if the intake turbine spins. Give it some throttle and see if it spins up. You might just have a dirty air cleaner.

Just keep your fingers out of the turbo if the engine's running.

If you dont mind Crawling up hills and smoking like Freight engine then it should be fine. I am having serious doubts on my Turbo's function and my car crawls but goes up hills.
