Differential / Rear Axle Rotation Question...

Hey all,

I just finished a rear brake job on the '85. Calipers, rotors, e-brake shoes.

Everything has been running fine, but i noticed some (what I thought was) strange stuff when testing the rear e-brakes.

With the rear wheels in the air and engine running...

-When I put the car in drive, only the *left* wheel turns easily
-When I put the car in reverse only the *right* wheel turns easily

When the car is off and the transmission is in neutral, the wheels take approximately the same torque to rotate.

(I have quadruple checked my brake job e-brake adjustments per the FSM)

Am I just observing normal rear wheel drive behavior or is something up?

Thanks,
dd

I think that's probably pretty normal for a RWD car with an open diff, with both wheels off the ground. Whichever one is slightly easier to turn will get all the power.

yup, normal.
also notice, that when you turn the wheel with the car off, the opposite side turns the opposite direction.
