1976 240D trying to get it to start

The other day I busted the oil pan on my 240D.

I shut the car off about 4 seconds after this happened.

The next day I put a new oil pan on and oil and tried starting it up, it turned over but would not run.

Before the busted oil pan this car would start up first try and never gave me problems so I'm confused.

I checked to make sure the cam and chain was moving, so its not locked up.

Trying to get some ideas so I can get it back on the road.
All 4 injectors are getting fuel

The 2 loops on the side of the glow plugs get red hot.
The fuel and oil pressure gauge stopped working after this happened.
The fuel pump primer leaks fuel around the knob that you untwist, but only when your priming the pump.

Any ideas?
Thanks

What were the circumstances surrounding the broken oil pan? Are the glow plugs getting hot? A simple test is to look at the squiggly wires to see if they are getting hot.

I was going to suggest changing to the new style plugs... on your old ones if one is out they are all out.. like Xmass tree lights... ( or in the old days at least )....

What do you have to do in order to convert to the new style glow plugs?
Any suggestions or links where I should get them from?

X2 Sounds just like mine did when the glow plugs were out. Replaced em with new style and she ran like a top.

How about that oil pressure vstech mentioned?

OK, I'll be the first one to say it. That's what you get for lowering your car On a 115, I'm pretty sure you'll need a new relay in addition to the plugs themselves. At least 617's in 115's do. Maybe you can get away with the old relay with only 4 plugs.
Check the connection between the firewall and the first plug. Maybe the wire broke as the engine was going up and down? Also check the strip fuse on the firewall (I think you have one--maybe not)

Just don't be misled by 123 conversions. There are a few threads in that collection which describe the problems associated with retrofitting just the plugs to a 115 617 with the original relay.

Since you know the proper criteria...and I do not... can you find him an appropriate thread to follow ?

I don't recall a thread on a 115 616 conversions. The threads I recall were all 5 cylinder and I seem to remember that while someone couldn't get 5 plugs to work off the relay, they got 4 plugs to work or something like that. Does anyone else recall a thread on a four cylinder 115 pencil plug conversion?

There info in this thread, if the link is still working:

Four out of Five might be just fine.... and a lot less trouble than doing the wiring to get all five to work... way more than 99 percent would start with four hot pencil plugs glowing for 45 seconds ( like FSM suggests if problems are happening with usual glow light out attempt ) before attempting the first crank even in pretty cold weather....

Be careful. You can't just swap in newer style plugs from a newer engine, the thread sizes are different. You need the special retrofit pencil plugs.
