ABS on a w123 300TD?

1984 300TD Euro. My dash has an ABS light. How can I verify that I have ABS for sure?

Look under the hood for an ABS pump -- it will have electrical cables and a whole nest of brake fluid lines, similar in size to injector hard lines. Look on the front wheels -- there will be an electrical cable going to a speed sensor (NOT the cable that goes to the brake pad wear sensor). I don't know where they hid the electronics of the ABS but probably somewhere out of sight. Finally, you could drive the car and, someplace where it's safe, stand on the brakes as hard as you can. You should feel a pulsating in the brake pedal as the ABS turns the pressure off and on. Incidentally, the ABS light should come on for ten seconds when you first start the car (meaning, during pre-glow).

Yes, that's an ABS pump. Go try it out.

Are there any dirt roads around Brooklyn? It is easy enough to try on dirt roads.

If it works properly, you can drive down a road with one side on the pavement & the other side on the dirt & hit the brakes as hard as you can & it wont skid on the wheels on the dirt. It kind of does your head in a bit the first time you do it. You find yourself wanting to correct for a car sliding in the dirt & it doesnt.

If the light comes on when you start the car, then goes out after a few seconds after starting the motor and stays off after you drive the ABS should be working properly.

Actually... It does turn on and then turn off BUT when I put the car in drive and hit the accelerator pedal, it turns on. It stays on until I shut the car off. I think it's the OVP relay. One should be arriving tomorrow or on Monday.

The only way I ever got my 300d's abs to go off was to pull off the road, onto a grassy shoulder, at highish(45) speeds and stand on the brakes. This was on a country road with nice flat golf course type shoulders.

Ya... I'm not going to try that in Brooklyn. Going to CT next week. Maybe I'll try it out there. Scare the girlfriend. FUN!

If the light comes back on once you start moving there is probably a bad wheel speed sensor. I'd say it's probably one of the front ones, too.

There are 2... Say if my brake sensor is broken, would that also cause the light to come on or is it just the ABS sensor?

Nope, the brake wear sensors are 100% separate from the ABS system. I bet the wiring diagram from a W126 would be close enough to help.

Here is a thread where I was working on the same ABS system on my Audi.
