unnececery junk under hood
I'm in the process of exorcising the vacuum demons from mu 83 240D and I was wondering, and the devices mounted on the drivers side fender, and the exhaust manifold the stuff that youse guys disconnect?

Devices on the driver's side? Not sure what devices you'd be removing.

Yes, not sure exactly what you're referring to on the inner fender. The egr system can be removed, may be a bit trickier on a 240. Do you have a butterfly in the intake opening?
If so, remove it and close off the holes on the sides with an appropriate item, a friend used dimes, jb welded in.

I lost half of my post!
There are a couple of vacuum devices. One goes to the exhaust manifold, one on the thermostat housing , and one on the passengers side fender, (damned tequila anyway) what is this stuff anyway and do I really need it? There isn't any of this on my 81 240D.

That crap is for the EGR. Pull the air cleaner off and take a look. If you can get away with it, find the old pre-'82 intake/exhaust manifold and get rid of all that stuff. I will bet that butterfly valve does nothing good at all for the car's breathing, if it works at all.
