Alternator Pulley - 1998 E300

Had some squeeling from the alternator the last couple of days. This morning I determined it was the alternator by shooting some WD40 on the alternator shaft and it quieted down. This afternoon I started the car and squeel, clang, bang, boom the pulley fell off. The pulley seems to have a bearing in it and the shaft is pretty torn up. I have a rebuild alternator on order.

1) How does this pulley mount on the new alternator? I guess I need to check if the new alternator comes with a pulley.

2) How do I get the alternator out? Does it drop down and go behind the fram memeber or is it more difficult?

3) Where do I find the belt routing and for the tensioner do I just unbolt the one side to loosen it?

I'm not familiar with that model but it looks like a bit of alternator is still attached to the pulley.

To loosen the belt, remove the nut that takes a 13mm wrench at the upper perch of the tensioner spring. Put a tire iron or big screwdriver in the hole atop the perch. Pull the tire iron or big screwdriver towards the passenger side enough to allow the bolt the nut was attached to retract towards the cabin. Slowly release the tire iron or big screwdriver to release tension on the belt.

Most of the time it's easier to remove the alternator by pulling it forward then up once the fan shroud is out of the way. Forward and down is quicker if you don't have cooling and intercooling plumbing in the way.

From the looks of your picture, you will need a new pulley, and its not just an ordinary pulley. For your model car, you will need a "Free Wheel Clutch Pulley" like the one in your picture. The clutch pulley compensates for the compression stroke of the engine, and keeps the serpentine belt from vibrating. That vibration will cause premature wear to the small shock and associated tensioner parts. You might also end up with an annoying taping sound at idle. Prior to doing any work, disconnect the battery, remove the belly pan, and disconnect the wires attached to the alternator. There are two large bolts that need to be removed, and the alternator will drop out from the bottom. The easiest way to attach the pulley to the alternator is with the use of an impact wrench. If you have the owners manual for your car, the diagram for the serpentine belt can be found in it. Bear in mind, that most of the rebuilt alternators come with a standard pulley. The price of a free wheel pulley on ebay runs about 60-80 dollars. Good luck

The last time I bought a Goodyear Gatorback belt, the sleeve had a diagram of the belt routing.

Here's some guidance -
