Are you putting an AX15 behind it? Or going automatic?

Not much difference apart from the early 617's in the 79 and 80 SD's I think.

Other than a factory turbo engine over a normally aspirated engine I'd say your'e better off shopping condition than specific features or performance ratings. Everything else being equal I'd prefer not to deal with California emissions but it's easy to hang non-trap oxidizer manifolds on a late California engine. I don't know if any 617 IP has electronic idle control. You might want to avoid that for the simplest conversion. And the early but questionably reliable tach amplifier might be simpler to adapt than the later flywheel triggered tach.

This is kind of funny really. Sort of like asking, "which is less fattening, French fries or (battered and fried) cheese sticks".

There should be hp/tq charts by model year available. So doing a quick google search for "OM617 torque" a wiki page returned this:

Quote:
The OM617.952 also displaced 2998 cc with a 90.9 mm bore and 92.4 mm stroke. Power output was 125 hp (91 kW). Torque was rated at 180 lb·ft (244 N·m).

Applications:

123 PS (121 hp/91 kW)
1982-1985 300D Turbo
1982-1985 300CD Turbo
1981-1985 300TD Turbo
from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM617_engine

Looks like you just want a 617.952. The later motor.

Oh, and as I had wanted to swap an OM617 into my HiLux Toyota, but a move in the near future may scrap that project.
I have a strong 617 in an '83 SD.

This should help...

The OM617.912 was a 3.0 L (3005 cc) engine. Power output began at 80 hp (59 kW) but rose to 88 hp (65 kW) in 1979.
Applications:
The revised OM617.950 also displaced 3.0 L but was now 2998 cc with a 90.9 mm bore and 92.4 mm stroke. Power output was 110 hp (82 kW). This engine was used in the W116 300SD from 1978 to 1980. It was the world's first turbocharged production diesel sedan and the first sedan with a 5-cylinder engine of any kind.

The OM617.951 also displaced 2998 cc with a 90.9 mm bore and 92.4 mm stroke. Power output was 125 hp (91 kW). Torque was rated at 180 lb·ft (244 N·m).

617.951 would work also.
The 617.950 has less horsepower but an intake without an EGR. It doesn't have an oil separator either.

How can they say that when right above they imply that the '74 240D 3.0 beat the '78 300SD to market by 4 years?

The 74 240d 3.0l wasn't turbocharged.

Not enough difference to worry about. The only significant difference is whether you want a mechanical oil pressure gauge or an electrical one. 81-85 SD's have electrical, the rest mechanical.

I interpret 5-cylinder engine of any kind to mean turbocharged or normally aspirated. So there

richclan, you're wading in the kiddie pool. You want to talk to the folks in the diving pool if you want to mess with injectors and pumps for maximum torque. Here's the springboard for the diving pool - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php?f=100 And do a search on Myna.

Any of them will work. Other than the first generation that had the least amount of power, they all will perform about the same in a CJ/YJ conversion with the larger tires on it. The reason I asked if you were going Auto or AX15 is turbo lag. That is the issue with them. The ones I've been involved with tend to fall on their face while shifting until you get the hang of it. Can be a bit frustrating having the rebuild boost with each shift. But have fun with it, it's a unique ride.

Thank you for that info in your post.

Not to nit pick, but I think the last sentence is incorrect:
"It was the world's first turbocharged production diesel sedan and the first sedan with a 5-cylinder engine of any kind."

I believe the first sedan with a "5-cylinder engine of any kind" was the 1974-76 W115 240D 3.0.
