83 300d - Buying advice?

Hi Folks,
I just went to look at a 1983 300d that is for sale here in PEI. I would appreciate any comments\advice.

Here are the particulars:
original owner, 200,000 kilometres (about 120,000 miles) ac/sunroof, pw, pdoorlocks, great interior,
good body (but a little bit of rust on the inside bottom of the doors & along the rockers)

Concerns:

- Hasn't been really driven steady for about a year. Was started last In Nov/01
- The engine won't turn over as the battery was weak & it was cold ( I suspect a starter or cable issue? as the headlights were bright- but no starter clikcing or glow plug light)
- Trans. oil leak under oil pan of trans.- actually leaking on the exhaust pipe
- The front of motor seemed a bit oily - but no drips on the ground
- Muffler & brake rotors are pretty rusty

The owner will give me a call when the motor is running so I can take the car for a spin, check the blowby, accessories etc............

She is asking $4500 Can - but is VERY open to offers.

My question - Is there anything specific I need to be looking at on this
year\model of MB? Should I be concerned about any of the above problems? (obviously the non running is a bit of an issue )

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Aivars

ps Car also comes with an extra set of alloy wheels & other odds & ends

Holy Jeez, Man - I paid less than that for a near pefect absolutely rust-free 1983 300D with 220000 miles on it, that runs outstandingly well, and everything worked when I bought it. (I have been trying to attach a picture of it & my other 2 cars, but the "file is too big")
I hope she can be talked down A LOT.

Aivars, you would be well served by extending your search for a good 300D westward. They are quite plentiful here & in Alberta, and the $$$ you save will buy your family a holiday on the west coast and in the mountains. Don't worry about the 300D - a decent one should easily make it back east. (You, on the other hand, may die of boredom crossing the prairies)

I picked up an '83 300D with similar mileage for $2300. Owner had spent $6000 refurbishing it in the past 5 years and only put on 1000 miles. He told me the body work was done by the same guy who worked on P.M.Trudeau's Mercedes. A/C compressor was seized' rear windows don't work but all in all I think I got a good deal. Spend some time on Ebay, it seems like prices there are reasonable even with our lowly dollar. By the way, I remember when the Can$ was worth 1.08 U.S.. We'll never see that again!

I realize that the owner is asking big bucks, when really the car probably worth less than 1/2 of the suggested price. I'll wait a few weeks & then give her a call again. The car has been for sale since Dec/01 & she seemed to be anxious to get rid of it. I guess if they can't get it started thats when I'll really have to decide if I want to "gamble" a bit.

Thanks for your input!

Ps We just got wacked with 35 cm of snow today.... maybe I should be buying a snowblower instead??

With the exchange rate she is probably asking around $2750 U.S. Judging by what we can get them for on ebay, it sounds like the car is worth $1000-1500 U.S.

The key for me is getting that engine running and determining how tight the compression is. If it doesn't use oil and is tight, the other issues are negotiable and can be fixed (yourself) very affordably.

ajb - I have a friend in from Stratford PEI, and it snowed here for the first time in 2years. Screwed up our golf plans, and made driving in the mountains in a rwd car a bit tense. My buddy travelled across the continent & brought Your Snow here!!

Ducati ..... when I was shoveling the snow here this am, I was thinking of the lucky Texas MB owners on the forum with their nice weather, Lone Star beer & rust-free Mbs..... ah the life!!

Have fun sailing - tell your buddy from Stratford (which is where I live) that he better get ready to shovel when he gets home as more snow on Thurs.

My friend is heading back to his home on Falcon Drive on Sat. - hopefully his missus has been shovelling out their long winding driveway. Their Green Honda delSol is apparently buried & she had been driving their F250, which she hates. I Emailed her this morning to gloat, then looked outside to see that mother nature was unkind to us, too. What a horrible suprise. It Never snows here...well, Almost never.
