Best and worst road trips in your diesel MB.

My trip last year into the hill country here in Texas was my top RT,with rolling hills and turns around passes that criss crossed the Guadalupe river several times ,it was a real easy for the 5 cylinder 617 turbo to boost up and down the passes. It turns out my worst RT was a trip to Dallas some 4yrs back, due to a failing bearing in the half shaft I had to limp some 80 miles home in the middle of the night doing 50 mph.

Best and worst were the same trip in the SDL. I flirted with the high end of the engine temp gauge while getting acquainted with the [IP] governor and experienced how incapable R134a is at keeping an SDL cabin cool in downtown L.A. when it's over 100*F out.

I made two trips in past winters to the DC area, from here in Indianapolis. The W123 85 Turbo did a great and very comfortable job. I didn't or need AC, and the heater was very good. Mileage was good, the seat comfy and it ran along on the interstate very well. The mountains of Pennsylvania and Maryland were no problem to that good old car. My biggest concern was with the automatic transmission, but that also, did a great job. Last summer I drove my 300E 5 speed to Toronto. It was mid June, and the trip up was cool. and without AC it was very pleasant. I returned before the weekend, actually a year ago today, and it was very warm. But it is a delightful car to drive, warm but very easy to live without AC. I love those outdoor smells, most of them, but the noise on the Interstate without AC is really hard to live with.

Best road trip was a family trip to Central New York to visit family. It was about September, roof top cargo carrier, wife, kid, dogs and everything but their kitchen sink.
We had a relaxing trip up through the mountains and a great trip back. Perfect weather and the car was a joy.

Worst trip had nothing to do with the car, but this past winter here in lovely, "No one should be on the roads in winter with out a winter driving proficiency classification on their license", washington metro, we were stuck on the highway for over 5 hours. The trip should have taken 30 minutes returning from a social gathering honoring a recently deceased friend. A snow storm blew in and dropped 6-8" of snow. The major highway back into town wasnt cleared properly and people that had no business being on the road were stuck everywhere leaving the highway nearly impassible to those that can drive. So now the few remaining drivers that had no business being on the roads try to pass, do so poorly, get stuck, and thus sealing the gap making the highway shut down.

Fortunately we had plenty of fuel and lots of heat. We just parked and took turns sleeping and keeping an eye on what was going on.

That was a short local trip that was by far one of the worst in recent memory.

Caution to anyone traveling through the washington area in the winter. Be Ware ! They cant drive here to save their lives !

Best: Driving from Atlanta to Alaska in the summer of 2009. Two guys with camping gear, food, beer, tools, a lot of spare parts, and a replacement 617 motor in the back. Trip of a lifetime, and the '85 wagon didn't miss a beat.

Worst: After purchasing a 'new' '87 TD, I lost a rear wheel bearing while driving it home to Ann Arbor, MI. A crappy experience... but also a learning experience.

We've taken random trips to New England to see my family. But an annual 2 week vacation trip my wife and I (and sometimes my mother-in-law) take is from Roanoke, VA to Mason, OH to go to Kings Island amusement park over the weekend, then go through Toledo OH, and visit her family, and then go to Sandusky OH, and see more of her family, and visit Cedar Point. From there, we make round trips to Findlay and back, and Akron and back to visit even more of her family. Lastly, we go back to Roanoke, VA. We take different MB diesel car each year. It's about 2400 miles each time depending on whether we also sneak up to Erie PA while up there. This year, I'm hoping to either take my repowered 350SDL when finished, or maybe, just maybe, scramble and get my 1983 300td wagon wrapped up and take that on the trek.

As far as the worst trip in a MB Diesel for me, Renntag would appreciate this. It had nothing to do with the car, which I bought from Renntag over a year ago. It had to do with driving through the night 5 hours and getting back in the AM hours coupled with frigid temps, and snow covered roads. The car had a 2006 inspection sticker on it. We put a battery in, changed the fuel filter, fresh fuel, primed the pump, and it rumbled to life. Thanks to Renntag for having all the guys there for the help pushing it out of the snow. But even during this worst trip for me in an MB diesel, I was toasty warm with that heater cranking out some BTU's.

Renntag, if you still need those 300SDL interior parts, let me know. I've got to go out to where I have it stored, and remove the fuel pivot for a 350SDL repowering project I'm working on. Apparently, the 350SDL has a different pivot setup.
