79 turbodiesel into an 83 380 sel
I've decided to start another thread (now that I'm into the build).
Not that there's anything wrong with the other thread, I just want to make it easier for others to find results in their search. For every hour I have spent wrenching, I have spent at lest five reading. My hope is to help some others cut down that time. I will post pictures this evening after my next wrench session (later today). I am currently 20 hours into the build. I have the platform bay empty of the motor, but not cleaned up yet. The same with the donor. I would recommend to anyone wanting to do this two things: 1. Get the same generation. Most of my problems will be wiring and vac, and having the same generation would solve most of those problems. 2. Get a donor car. My end result will be a blend of the two, and trying to find/purchase the ancillaries would kill a budget fast. You would triple the cost of the build before you were done. Here's my current list of questions (I will add pics of questionable items later). 1. There's a a round plug set up on the td. When I pulled the back to get it off the car, the wires came out. I would like to make sure that I put the wires back correctly. Is there a thorough wire schematic, or can someone tell me what order they were in? 2. There's four plugs running into the driver's side of the diesel tranny. What are they for? This one is important, as I won't stab until I know for sure. Thanks in advance. I'm headed back to the shop (with a camera and computer this time). Today I will be swapping the glow plug stuff and pull the mechanical speedo. I will also be cleaning up the donor motor. |

1. Might be the tach amp. Where was it located? Do the wires lead to the crank pulley?
2. Hmm... tranny would have the NSS including reverse and the kickdown switch. Someone else will describe the other two. Will you keep the 116 tranny? it might be simpler to swap in a 126 Diesel tranny with the proper speedo signal and linkage than to modify the 116 tranny or fit a 116 speedo in the 126 cluster. I'm keeping the tranny that was on the diesel; they are still together. The are four wires that plug into the bottom of the 380 tranny. I am going to pull back some casing and see if the colors are the same. Fingers crossed. Does anybody know of a source for an adjustable hall effect sensor source? If I can find one, I can retain the 380 dash, and stick with the vac oil pickup. I'm having fits deciding which way to take the cluster. Time to clean things up while I stew on it. |

Nope. Different colors. Two purple, a black and yellow, and a grey and yellow.
I'm still hoping they serve the same purpose. It looks like I can crack the housing on the 380 set and free the end of the loom. |

One of the cables that ran above the valve cover goes back to the dash, and is a little twist knob.
Was this for fine tuning the cruise control, or is that a "choke"? Pulling it for transfer, whatever is was. I am now again faced with the lack of holes in my firewall to shove some stuff through. |

The lower hose on the key vac was full of oil.
I'm considering using a ford style vac switch for the ignition, and leaving the current tumbler in place. Is it positive vac or lack of vac that kills the nipple on the back of the injector pump? Last edited by 3jvj; 06-30-2011 at 09:07 PM. |

Ah, yes, an idle control knob. 126 Diesels don't have that.
I'm not familiar enough with the 116/617 to know how oil gets to the key switch. You can use a MB overboost protection solenoid as an electric shutoff actuator. Positive vacuum (!) kills the engine. Turning the key to ON or RUN vents the vacuum line to the actuator. Turning the key to OFF connects the actuator to source vacuum. Sixto 87 300D |
