The steering angle is reset by turning the steering wheel lock to lock and hitting the bump stop for ~1/2 sec each time.

Try that before replacing anything. The sensor is effected by low voltage.

a colleague of mine has a similar car and he suffered similar problems, the culprit was the alternator pulley for his case.

Yes, clean the wheel sensors before you buy new ones. I had this problem with my w210 when I bought it. no more trouble (from BAS/ASR) in the last ~50k miles.

edit: Oh, right, steering angle sensor, glad to hear it.

I have the same problem on my 98 C280(Sport). I've replaced the brake light switch (001-545-0109) but have not done the steering wheel turn to turn. But I just want to ask what "wheel sensors" the prior ^^^ poster was talking about (I just did brakes and rotors and saw that ABS sensors and the slots on the hubs)?

I think you're talking about the same thing, the ABS or wheel speed sensors are one in the same. They're magnetic sensors and tend to get gummed up with metal filings over time, clean them with brake cleaner and get all the metal off. Be careful removing and installing.

I would try turning the wheel all the way to the left and hold for a few seconds, then all the way to the right and hold, then back to center before cleaning the wheel speed sensors.
