How Do I Remove Pull Starter Knob?

I'm trying to remove the pull starter knob assembly in my 1968 200D but I can't figure it out. First of all I can't figure out how to get the knob off. I finally figured out how to detach the cable from the assembly but I can't get the unit out because the knob won't fit through the hole in the dashboard.

Thank you very much for the help! I was also told that the knob unscrews, though it seems the shaft spins with it. I'll stick something in the hole in the shaft to keep it from turning.

The starter knob unscrews when a small nail is placed through the shaft so that the shaft doesn't spin with the knob. After this I was able to remove the unit from the dashboard.

the new part is listed on worldpac for less than 10 dollars. they still have it in stock. its a simple removal, the cluster may have to come out first if u dont want to be upside down.
