Exclamation 82 300SD Help! how do I setup the timing chain? new head MB manual is no help

I just finished putting together my 300SD motor 617 I am quite confused how to setup the timing chain it was never removed from the block but I think it may have slipped I don't know if the chain drives the injection pump this is the first time to setup a timing chain. I torqued down the head I have everything in place. I am very sleep deprived I stayed up all night putting together the engine cuz the weather sucks and its too hot to work during the day.

I have ALLDATA on my computer and I have looked through it many times but I can't make scene of it my camshaft has an 05 stamped on the back of it. Please help this kid out so I can go to school!

I can't see your pictures 'cos I don't have a facebook account - and sorry I'm not joining! If you are unsure about the chain driving the injection pump (IP) then remove the vacuum pump and you'll see the timing device behind. The chain drives the timing device which is connected to the intermediate shaft which then drives the IP.

If the chain wasn't going round this huge cog on the timing device I guess you'd have about 6cm of chain sticking out the top of the engine!

Have you removed the timing chain tensioner?

What did you do with the chain when the head was off and why do you think it slipped? Did you note the position of the cam on the original head before removing it?

The chain is allegedly stuck inside a 617 (/a) and can't skip. Search for"timing chain stretch"for pics that will id your alignment verification marks.

And Viola! It's Alive!!! There is a trick that took me forever to figure out from the FSM, which has really complicated instructions. If timing isn't known or chain has been diconnected or it just slipped and you have to restart, first set crank at "0" and Camshaft marks lined up properly with match, mark on cam tower. Then rotate engine for a full turn until you begin to build up compression, then stop at 25* BTDC. Now set that IP up with both marks lined up on the front of the pump. You can only see this with the IP out of the car. Now install the pump WITHOUT turning the engine to "0"! You want the engine to be in the "start of delivery" when you put the pump back on!
