Bumper Separation Anxiety

Hey guys and gals,

My front bumper was a little loose. I pulled on it, and it came right off!

It seems the adhesive that was used to mount the bumped tot he bumper mounts has given up.

How can I best re-mount it (what adhesive)? The bumper itself is fine - no rust.

On a brighter note - it came off at a convenient time to access other rust spots on the front end to patch :-)

dd

I guess you're talking about a US spec bumper?

check out document 88-205, "Remove and install rubber cover at front bumper" - looks like no adhesive is needed.

I can't suggest a specific product, but there are some structural adhesives produced by 3M that would probably work. I would check with a local auto body supply shop, and try to find something available in a Duo Pak. (a little creativity with some wood scraps can turn any caulk gun in to a Duo Pak dispenser.)

I can ask my shop for suggestions, but I won't be back in to pick up supplies from them until at least next week.

KAadams - that would be great - Id love to know what to do with it.

I saw a fairly cool mechanical solution here:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=299088&highlight=bumper+fell

This is for the rear bumper i but I see no reason it wouldn't work for the front as well.

The mechanical solution looks like a good one, but I would be concerned about breaking the chrome layer with holes and adding places to hold dirt and water.

You know, you could just try putting it on with some urethane windshield adhesive, like 3M Window-Weld. It takes a little time to cure, but a lot of people have been using it to fill in and stiffen motor mounts on FWD cars for several years. You can also find it in just about any auto parts store as a result. The stuff cures slightly flexible to allow for different expansion and contraction rates between glass and metal, and it it will hold a windshield in place with an air bag bouncing off of it. It holds up to the abuse in solid motor mount applications, too.

For under $20, it's what I would try first.

Yes the thick rubber band across the front could be secured with screws--last one I took off a PO used pop rivets--just dont drill into it more than 1/2--3/4". Delibes was swapping his out in my driveway and i noticed someone had used a hot glue gun on the seperated thru tabs on his US bumper.

Oops, I forgot to specifically mention that the Window-Weld bonds rather tenaciously to the rubber found in motor mounts, too. Who wants to try it? My parts car has a front bumper held on by bailing wire. If someone wants to bring over a tube of the stuff, I'll order a pizza and we can call it a party. Heh.

If you're referring to the rub strip, there is no adhesive. It's a three part affair. Two plastic mounting strips, which must be held tight towards each other and the rubber piece that simply fits over the two plastic pieces.

to be clear DD44, you are having a problem with the entire bumper falling off your car right?
not just the rubber strip.

Yes - i should post a pic.

The whole thing - the big chrome piece - comes off the two mounts that come off straight from the body.

Pics

So heres how the bumper came detached - see pics. I have two rubber mounts and one big bumper that need to be re-adhered somehow.

The 3M 'Window Weld' or structural adhesive mentioned earlier are certainly options.

Any other thoughts? Surely someone has done this...
