Rear driver side clunk wagon. Sound included.

1984 300td euro. Can someone please help me identify the sound coming from my rear driver's side wagon? Only happens when I hit a bump.

Sound happens @ 1 sec, 3 sec, and the big one (and more usual sound) 11sec.

Appreciate it!

First thing to check is the rear anti-sway bar link. When they break you may not hear an issue until you hit a bump or make a sharp turn.

If those are good - check shocks next.

If those are good - look for a human head in the spare tire well!

Thanks brassmonkey. Is the swaybar location the same as it is in this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxuAbEVa28A

It sounds terrible! Would I need to remove the tire to inspect it?

I'd check the inside first. Spare tire fastened down correctly? Anything in the compartments?

I'm almost 100% sure that it's not something inside the car since I don't really hear it unless I open the window. It's really loud. People look at my car when I'm driving down the street.

Yes - that is the part in the video - though - on my car it looked different - in any case - it bolts on in front of the brakes just like in the video - it should not have any play. It should be tight.

You dont need to remove the wheel - but it sure helps. You will have to stick your head under the car otherwise.

You may be able to just reach in - in front of the wheel and feel around. But its better to get eyes on.

Great! Hmmm... I don't see anti-sway bar link on fastlane. I see a sway bar link... http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1984-Mercedes--Benz-300td-Suspension&yearid=1984%40%401984&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ&modelid=6233%3AED|10000135%3AMBC|1518%40%40300TD&catid=241464%40%40Suspension&subcatid=241475@@Sway+Bar+Link&mode=PD

Does it go by another name?

Well after researching a bit, it seems to me that anti-sway bar link and sway bar link is the same thing.

Yep! It's the rear sway bar. Gonna purchase one now. This is an easy job right?

Sway bar / Anti-sway bar = same thing - It is a very easy job. You should be able to change it with simple tools.

If you are not the mechanical type - a word or warning! You will need to remove the wheel to do this job. DO NOT work on the car while its on a jack!

Get a good jack stand or find a large solid block or something to prop the car on. If you are pulling on a wrench you could very easily tip it over and crush yourself.

Your mother or wife would not be very happy to find you squashed under an old car!

Thank you! I'm not the mechanical type. I'm made of organic material.

In all seriousness, I am ok with mechanical stuff. I do have a couple jack stands and a floor jack. I have replaced my driver's side UCA with the help of this forum.

Do you know what size wrenches I'll need? I found a thread mentioning that it was a 14mm but then someone said no It's a 17mm and no one chimed in to say what was right. Is the job as easy as jacking the car up, removing tire, remove nuts, take out sway link, and reverse? Would I need to support the LCA with the floor jack?

Thank you!

17mm. No need to do anything other than remove the wheel, that's just to gain access.

You might need 2 17mm wrenches. or a 17mm open end and a ratchet and 17mm socket.
