It's nothing money cant fix : (

Little history - I found a 79 240D that hadn't run in quite some time. I got it cheap (but in hindsight - free would still have been too expensive) and had it running and moving in 3 days.

So then I started going through some of the bad parts. Most recently I boiled the brake fluid in the front caliper.

So - I ordered a set of new calipers and spent the morining replacing them. Its really not a tough job.

Well - I get it all done - and the starter went out

I cleaned all of the connections - battery @ the starter and the ground. Still no cranky.

I got a jumper wire and jumped the solinoid - it engages but the starter does not spin.

I went to pull it out - WTF! what kind of goofy german decided to use alan head bolts? Now I have a busted car that I can't fix w/o buying new tools.

Once I get this thing back on the road its for sale!!! I'll trade it too.

what a pain in the ...

Reasonable stanley allen head socket sets are available at any walmart which should cover the vast majority of allen head needs for that car, id also get a universal joint and a few extensions, then the bolts will be out in minutes.

However, you have a 30 year old car for 500 bucks that wasn't running when you bought it, it would be wise to expect that everything may need work, repair, maintenance, or tinkering. In the same position, I would be surprised when something works, not when it doesn't.

I cant understand what you are concerned about !!!!

I have among others, a Jeep. It was made in Toledo Ohio. It has an Italian diesel motor (VM) . It has some regular (imperial ~ AF ~ inch) bolts, It has metric, double hex heads, alan & torx male & female as well.
You cant even see the starter.
To get it out requires removal of the LH engine mount & its brackets from the frame & motor, The lower suspension control arm & a heap of heat shielding.
The starter on a 240, you should be able to remove with 1 hand tied behind your back!!!

MB's are a dream to work on compared to many others.

I used the allen socket that came with from my buddys late 80's caprice foir his brakes or something.. least it's my understanding that GM had this specialty tool for their brakes... anywho it worked perfectly, slip out the old trans...er... I mean starter and slap and bolt the new one in.

Thanks guys - I think these old tanks are as cool as they get - I just wish I had some seat time on this one. Seems every time I run to the store I discover a new $200 something or other that makes the car unsafe to drive (or in this case not drive at all).

Now I'm afraid that after I get all of this done - & it running reliabley and safely - something crazy is going to happen.

I may just pull the engine and build a generator or something.

I have yet to price the starter - lets hope its not too much

If I can get the old one out - I know a shop in town that can rebuild it for cheap - I may go that route. I've used them before and they do good work.

Gravy.

Man, starters on the four-pots are EASY! Wait 'til you have to R+R one on a 5 cyl. turbo!

Good luck, amigo! Lots of starter info on here. Everyone has their own technique, and I don't know a single individual who has failed, ultimately, in their attempt. Not fun, but doable. After you've done a couple five or six, it's really pretty straightforward. What they, in the industry, call "gravy money". A job that pays, what, 2.5 hours? Takes all of about an hour, or less, with the correct tool setup.

Jay.

The store? 90% of what you need to keep these cars running is at wrecking yards.
