stubborn alternator bracket

I found an 1983 300 at the junk yard and have been trying to take off the alternator bracket to replace the broken one on my sons 83 240d. I have removed the alternator and four of the five nuts holding the bracket in place. However, the fifth one located in front of the engine, just behind the harmonic balancer is proving quite hard to get to. I have been able to move the balancer so I can have clear access to the nut (semi-clear access. What tool (I know it is a 17 mm) do I need to get to that last nut? Everything I have is either too big or not in the right shape. A picture of this tool would be nice too, but I would settle for the correct tool. thank you.

There is more than one type of Alternator Bracket out there. However, when I removed the one on my 84 I did not remove Front Damper nor did I use any special Tools.

I have also not read of anyone needing any special tools on any of the Forums.

I believe I did use a Socket with a U-joint but my memory of where on the Bracket I used it is very hazy.

The only time I looked at a bracket like that, I concluded the balancer had to come off to access that bolt. I may be completely mistaken.

what's wrong with the one on your 240? most of us only replace the stamped steel plate that surrounds the alt itself...

the one on the 240 broke in half where the bolt that secures the alternator to the bracket. The part where the bolt screws into the bracket broke in half

How 'bout standard box/open end wrench or ratchet? You might also want a cheater bar and plenty of PB Blaster.

I believe to get to the front bolt, you will have to remove the pulley, and vibration damper. there is a notch in the balancing disc when lined up will give you access to the bolt.

Be sure to replace the dampner in the same orentation as you removed it, for balancing purposes. just in case.
