before buying do this

Take the oil filler cap off and leave it in place if there is lots of blowby it will want to shoot off. Do a search for buying tips on the forum. Check to see how long the trans takes to shift into gear 1 or 2 secs is ok 3 secs is too long. What the other guys said too. Cheers Dan

It is a lot different to your 250 !!
I was driving an '86 190d (w201) 2.5na (om602) until this morning when the rust reached crital mass and the right front strut tower broke away from the car. It probably only had 50hp left, no suspension to speak of, shifting problems, I think I could drive a lada or trabant and think it was better.

As said above, unless the mileage is documented since say 1985, don't believe the number in the cluster!
supposedly has full documentation, agree with the condition VS numbers

Otherwise assume the thing really has more like a quarter million miles (400,000 km) on it. This isn't really that bad, but it's a time when you need to start worrying about timing chains, front end rebuilds, and the auto trans wearing out.
I bought my 190 for $500, non working odo at 250000mi, full of rust. Only expected to get a year out of it and I did! As long as the car is solid I can work around any mechanical issues. No yearly inspections. Only have to get it on the road and I'm good. No point throwing good money at rotten cars.

I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) these were the best benz's ever built? I don't expect it to be perfect but if it is really that good what a score. I expect it may be somewhat embellished (mileage weight) so will be approaching it with scepticism. I'm a licensed mechanic, 11 years experience on diesels. should be able to check it out myself. Seller was more than willing (infact suggested it) to allow me to take it anywhere to be inspected. Although I've always been excited to get my next benz, this happened at a really bad time. I really didn't need my 190 to disintigrate while driving to work this am. Hard to find a car up here without any rust. If it is solid, runs and drives well, I will buy.

*in Ontario the mileage is recorded every time the plates are renewed. If there is a rolled back odo, the vehicle report will reflect it.

I'm happy to hear though that these are not "flawed" somehow and can infact go forever with proper maintenance. Thanks for the help.

So Adam Sandler's Ode to My Car is your theme song? Today I was pondering why mechanics always seem to drive messed up cars. I'm guilty myself, and I'm sure my co-workers are too.

I think so. Most in diesel discussion would probably agree. If you ask an SL or AMG guy, you might get a different answer.

Rubber.

Upper and lower balljoint boots, CV joint boots, swaybar bushings, LCA bushings, flex discs, motor mounts, brake hoses. All that stuff, if it hasn't been changed, is probably almost shot due to age. Go get 'em, boy, pick that sucker apart!

X2!

Also, AC needs compressor and antenna is snapped off. Those are going to cost you so... they depreciate the vehicle. Cosmetic details and luxury add-ons on MB are always very expensive to remediate.

does the '82 use a servo for the climate control? that's something to check, the servo can be an issue.

Just crack a window open slightly.
Barely got over 97 last week.

Some here without AC use a drive in freezer to cool our cars. Yes cars, we always keep a second car in the drive in freezer so there is always a cool one available. . . really!
