Fuel Filters Service Interval??

I looked in my owner's manual and don't see the service interval for the fuel filters. How many miles before replacing them?

I just changed the two filters on my 300 SDL and 3 things immediately improved.

When coasting to a stop, sometimes the engine would stall from low RPMs. Feathering the throttle while braking was the workaround to prevent stalling. Now the RPMs stay up enough to not stall at traffic lights.

The car now starts a few seconds faster.

Because the car starts faster, the climate control glitch seems to have gone away. When cranking, the system voltage drops. If the CC fan tries to come on when the voltage is low, it fails to start, and it won't start blowing until the key is switched off and the power to the climate control is restored.

I've had some frigid winter and hot summer drives because of that glitch. Sometimes I would switch the car off and on again while at speed on the freeway. That would recycle the climate controls so the fan would start blowing.

So if you haven't changed your fuel filters in a long while and have any of those 3 problems, it may be time to change the filters.

Fuel filter longevity is severely dependent on fuel quality. It only takes one bad fill-up to completely clog a filter. Considering that a clogged filter tends to reveal itself, I tend to wait for symptoms. And I always keep a spare set of filters in the trunk.

I agree with the above but tend to change my Spin-on Fuel Filter every 1 or 2 years regardless if it is restricted or not.

On my Diesel Volvo I have gone as long as 4 years without changing the Filter as it has a Drain and you can drain off Water and some of the heavier crap that settle to the bottom.

People set up their own schedule. You have to decide if you want to try to prevent the Filter from getting restricted by changing it early or changing it only when it needs to be changed.

I buy about 98% of my Fuel from the same place and never have had any of my Filters get restricted; let alone plugged enough that I have noticed it.
But, as said previously that can change with one bad load of contaminated Fuel.

I have had it happen only once. Refueled at a brand-name truck stop while on the road. Pulled out of the truck stop, attempted to accelerate to the 55 mph speed limit, and hit a wall at about 35 mph. Secondary filter was full of a mud-like substance. The primary filter looked normal.

I have also cut open a few 20k mile filters and found them to look like new. That's why I just wait for "indications."

I have a gauge on my fuel system to tell me when to change filters. Why change it before it's used up? Filters actually do a better job at removing smaller particles as the miles pile on.

Tell us about this gauge, please, funola.

I generally change both fuel filters once a year unless, as Tango says, there are "indications." Then again, the two cars get driven only about 7500 miles/year.

I've also been fortunate to not have massive amounts of fuel tank crud loosened by switching to biodiesel and also to not have had a bad experience on the road. Someday I shall, I suppose, so I also carry spare filters in each car.

Edit: "Maintenance Manual USA / Passenger Cars" (Volume 2, Supplement 6, September 1985) lists fuel filter changes as "additional maintenance" items to be done every 30,000 miles.

I swap my canister filter every fall on principle....and the pre-filter as needed because its easily visible for condition.

Overkill, maybe. But I won't have a clogged filter on the coldest day of the year..miles from home...in a snow or ice storm.
