Defeated by 300SD hood cable grommet

About four years after buying the part, I finally got around to replacing the hood release cable on my 83 300SD. All went smoothly with the exception that I cannot get the large grommet or seal properly seated into the aft firewall. There is very little room to get your hand into the right place between the fuse box and the hood hinge.

If anyone has managed to do this please let me know the secret!

Thank you....

Keep trying and perhaps a bit of KY jelly will help?

I found the easiest approach was to unscrew the fuse box and lift it out of the way. (Disconnect the battery first, of course.) Then a little KY certainly helps. I know it sounds wierd but the advantage of KY is that it's water soluble and a little soapy water cleans it up when your done.

Ah, so the fuse box will move a little - excellent. I'll try that. The whole issue is a lack of leverage. My wife tried as well as her hands are smaller than mine but we still could not get the sucker in.

We had a good laugh about the use of "personal lubricant". Will add that to the toolbox.
