Is This Power Steering Pump Rebuildable?

I think I have traced an occasional funky clanking noise I get under the hood to my PS pump. The pump does not leak but I do have a large amount of axial play in the shaft. Look at the video that is attached to hear what it sounds like when I move it back and forth with my hands.

What part of the shaft or housing would wear in a manner that could cause this noise? Also the power assist I get from it is a lot less than in my Prius or Explorer. Can you check the output pressure of these pumps? It may be dying a slow death.

I have pump #5.

Thanks.

I would have thought so - so long as the damage to the bores inside aren't too bad. But even then you might be able to re-line if necessary. I would guess however it would be cheaper to buy a replacements (though I don't know what they cost).

Item 26 looks like a bearing.

Take it to bits - you might be lucky.

26 is labeled as a seal ring. Rebuilt units run about $195. This would be a C&M Hydraulics rebuilt unit.

EPC says the PS pump should be a A1244601780 Vickers or a A1244600280 ZF. Mine is a 2104660201 LUK. This must be a replacement??

My machinist friend says "someone put it together so it will come apart and be put together again." Getting parts may be an issue. Seals & bearings can frequently be bought from a bearing house. I'm always amazed how cheap brand name bearings & seals are when they are matched with a kit and not bought specified by some manufacturer.

Yes it does sound like a replacement. W210s were introduced in 1995

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W210

Could be an authorised replacement though.

Perhaps you'll be better off finding a second hand original? Or another second hand pump from a W210 - at least you know they work!

Here I can pick up a Vickers pump for a W123 (different from what you need) for about 50 - 75 euros. But it is prudent to reseal and clean it out before using. A reseal kit cost me about 30 euros if I remember correctly.
