Help me figure out what i need for this muffler please!

So my muffler fell off awhile ago. I was going to live with the noise, but it's just too loud and I can't take it anymore! Right now there's a rusty pipe going halfway to the back of the car. I took it to a muffler shop (the one that everyone seems to recommend around here) and they want $400 which seems really high. That's just a straight pipe back to a rear muffler, not even a center one. So I'm going to try to do it myself if possible.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to order to do this. I've attached a pic of what it looks like now. Please let me know if you think this is right. Tried to do in order from front to back. I think I'd hook in right where that clamp is:

Some sort of clamp for attaching center muffler to existing pipe??

W0133-1715227 - center muffler

Manufacturer: HJS
Part Number: W0133-1642955
Description: Muffler Clamp
Front resonator to final muffler.
Exhaust Hanger

W0133-1610390 - rear muffler

some rubber donuts

will this do the job? i could also live with just the rear muffler and a straight pipe to it, but i'm looking for the easiest solution. i figure this way would cost about $200. thanks!!!

first pic is from front facing back. not sure why this second pic is upside down. the second pic is of the joint where i would theoretically attach the center muffler. it is right underneath the dash. i wonder if i'd ever be able to get that rusty pipe off the other one...

Good idea flipping the car over to work on the exhaust!

With that much rust it's going to take some work getting that joint apart. Can you use a cutoff wheel?

check autoparts warehouse, brands: Ansa or Bosal. If they still make them. I just got the center pipe with resonator. Nobody and I mean Nobody has the front pipe for mine. Or Timevalve.com for stainless steel, It would be less than $400 they custom make them when you order them.

That seems high. When I was getting lots of exhaust work done, I could get a full dual system from the manifolds back for $200. This was with 2.25 or 2.5" mild steel and cheap Cherry Bomb knockoffs. I would think just one pipe and a cheap muffler wouldn't cost a whole lot.

that timevalve website has this helpful diagram, thanks:

http://www.timevalve.com/cat/us/p12b1.html

yeah, 400 seems high. i would have expected half that at least. i asked how much for just a straight pipe and they said $40 less. $360 for a straight pipe.

So I found the front downpipe for $40. Might be easiest just to do the whole thing rather than try to get that rusty thing apart and then find out it doesn't even fit. So here's what i've found, total comes to $230:

ansa front downpipe
bosal center muffler
bosal rear muffler
2 hjs muffler clamps
4 feq rubber donut hangers

am i good to go here?

That is very reasonable. Some will balk that it is not stainless, but some cars are not worth that. You're lucky they make it... well, on second thought, wait and see. I ordered the front pipe for mine from 4 different online parts places that said "In stock" only to get a email a couple of days later saying, "Sorry out of stock and we can't get it" One autoparts place even had one on Ebay and said "3 available" Then 4 days later I get a email, sorry out of stock. I got the center pipe with the resonator by Bosal. Now, I don't know what I'm going to do for the front pipe? I know a decent exhaust shop should be able to make one up, but the front pipe has that "Flex" section in it. I don't know it they can make a pipe with a Flex section? Does it absolutely need to have this flex section? Does anybody know? I think because the 300SDL was only made for two years there is not high demand and nobody makes the front pipe anymore.

The OP's car does not have a flex pipe yet, muffler shops do carry them.

just struggled with the bolts holding the front pipe to the exhaust but finally got them off! i'm going to need new bolts. can i just go to the hardware store and get stainless steel bolts or do i need something special? the part that holds the pipe to the exhuast seems solid so i think i'll reuse it unless someone thinks i should get a new one.

Find a proper exhaust shop, not one that installs ready made parts. Those places are useless. Find one that will fabricate and bend all the exhaust from scratch. The one I use can make a pipe cheaper than any parts store sells those paper thin junk exhausts. They are cheaper and the pipe is 3x as thick!
