Help! Vacuum pump replacement!

I forgot to set the engine at top dead center. When I pulled the pump off, it was under tension. I can't put the new pump on because the cam is out and the pump won't lay flat. I don't have the right size socket to put on the large crank bolt, (Do you know what size it is?) Can I "bump" the engine with the key? hopefully not starting the car. Is this too dangerous to try? Where are the marks to determine TDC?

I believe your Crank Bolt is 27mm (1-1/16") and I bleieve that is the same size as the Socket you use on your Injector.

As long as the Timer (Gear) is still bolted down you sould be able to simply crank/bump the Engine until it is in the position you want. It could be a little Oil might squirt out.

I had that oops with my 616 once. My solution was to push real hard so I could get the bolts in. Plan B would have been what you did. When I do valve adjustments I always just bump the engine over with the starter. I've gotten pretty accurate with that method.

Well, got the new one on. The old one really didn't look bad. It is an 86 and should have had the timing basket removed and a dam gasket installed, which it did not have. It was a newer style pump with the inclosed bearings and the torx screws on the front. But, I'm really disappointed because it was not the cause of my loud banging. Still banging! There's $285 down the toilet.

Check the belt tensioner damper. The bushings in the attachment eyes wear out far sooner than the damping hydraulics. Wedge a screwdriver tip between the head and upper attachment eye with the engine idling then see if the noise dissipates.

When installing a VP rotate the engine so the "lows" of the little rollercoster track on the timing device are vertical. At least on the 617/6s.

Here, I'll make you feel better. I just spend WELL over $400 for mine, and its making NO noise. Trouble is, when they STB, they do it in fashion. Read here replacement is 250,000miles. On the 95, it popped at 262 and ruined the engine ( metal throughout) . I'm only at 220K on this mechanically pristine 1996, but I do not want to ruin another motor by losing one.

You didnt waste $$ if it was original to the car. If it was a replacement, save it, you can re-run it after the next 200K.
