W126 back seat headrest installation DIY

I just finished installing headrests on my 300SD's back seat, and would like to share some photos and tips. The headrests, guide rails and grommets cost me about $30.00 at pick n pull. Yes, there was an a@%!# working the booth that day.

1. Pull the headrests, grommets, and guide rails from the donor seat. You can use a screw driver to pry off the rails. Just prying the tabs on one side is all that's necessary. You will want the other tabs in tact for re-installation.
2. (Photo #1) While holding the guide rail by hand, slide a wooden dowel, or metal rod such as the 3/8's extension pictured, up to the surface of the seat cover and mark it.
3. (Photo#2) Attach your guide rails to the frame of the seat. Even though 300SD's didn't come with headrests, the frame has the slots to accept the rails. You will need to scrape off the glue from the padding that was removed in order to get a snug fit. The guide rails should snap on to the frame, which is why we only lifted the tabs on one side of the rails when removing them from the donor car. If it doesn't snap on, don't be ashamed to use duct tape, no one will see it.
4. Cut two small holes where you made your marks earlier on the underside of the seat cover just big enough to slide the headrest posts through.
5. (Photo#3) Use the sticky leather padding that was on the underside of the grommet as a guide for your final cut.
6. Install your grommets and slide the posts in.

This was a very easy job. I recommend getting a brand new blade for your knife so that you don't have to use too much pressure while cutting. I really like the look of the headrests back there and when folded forward they don't block much of the view.

I love rear headrests. I went to the junk yard and just pulled the entire rear seat. I got a spare (only cuz they had two). Anybody need a near perfect rear backrest with headrests (grey leather from a 420sel)?
