starting problem
I've gotten great advice here in the past so now I'm back.
My 1987 190 D has always started with a quick turn of the key. In the last few months I've had to crank the engine and pump the accelerator to start. My husband, says it's the battery. I've driven this car for 16 years and don't remember the battery dying like this before. It seems more like it's not getting fuel. I don't want to buy a bettery I don't need. Both fuel filters and the oil have recently been changed. What do you think? Last edited by domtick; 08-17-2011 at 05:51 PM. |

Does the starter turn the engine over with enthusiasm? Plenty of auto parts stores will test your battery/alternator for free. Just be aware that they have a vested interest in the outcome of the test. |

Had the battery tested today and it's good.

You're saying it takes more cranking before the engine catches, right? If so, how does the engine idle once you release the starter? Does it idle smoothly immediately or does it stumble and sputter for a few seconds before stabilizing? One suspect could be lazy or tired glow plugs.
A quick test is to pinch the fuel line that returns to the tank. Find the small hoses that bridge the injectors. Follow them forward to where they connect to the big fuel filter by the power steering pump. The last small hose joins a bigger line from the fuel pump and continues as a thick rubber hose back to the fuel tank. Gently clamp the thick rubber hose then start the engine. If it's easier to start, you might have a worn or lazy pressure relieve valve in the injection pump. Don't drive the car with the return line clamped! Keep it clamped only long enough to do this test. Sixto 87 300D |

This is my experience anyway. You can also check the filter(s) or follow the other members advices.

Starting can be a problem if the Glow Plugs are not all good.
If its a fuel problem, the problem is normally worse if the car is parked facing up hill. If you park the car facing down hill ( best on a very steep grade) starting fuel problems should not be there as gravity will be stopping bleed back. Does the problem occur all the time or just when left overnight (when motor is cold)?

Runs fine once started. Yes, it is worse when parked facing uphill. Overnight does not seem to make a difference.

Best tighten all the fuel hose clamps. Replace any fuel lines that are perished or damaged. For now keep plenty of fuel in the tank & facing down hill when parked if you can. Good Luck with your car !
