83 240d valve adjustment- linkage
Hello,
Im hoping to do my first valve adjustment on my 83 240d. Ive read up and looked at the instructions on diesel giant. The linkage on my 240d seems to be different- and Im confused how to disconnect the area by the manual engine stop lever. There is a rod that goes straight back to the firewall, and I dont see how to easily separate it from the valve cover. The diesel giant instructions suggest disconnecting the bare minimum linkage and then resting the valve cover on the fender. Hopefully the photos show what I am trying to describe. My car is definitely overdue for a valve adjustment, Id really appreciate any help getting started on this. Thanks! |

Solved!
Here's a solution posted by Govert70227 at benzworld- Disconnect the securing pin at red arrow #1. Disconnect the socket at red arrow #2. Now move the rod in the direction of the green arrow #1, it should come out of the rubber piece on the firewall. Now move rod in the direction of blue arrow #2. Perhaps you'll need to remove a clip, but I cannot see it in the picture. And you'll probably have to disconnect at blue arrow #3. |

Looks like you might need one of these:

Thanks! Thats the black rubber mounted on the firewall, correct? Just curious, how could you tell it needs to be replaced? Im sure you're right, Im just wondering how its supposed to look.

That piece of bent wire supporting the linkage rod wasn't installed in Stuttgart.

Its funny I wasn't sure what to make of that when I saw it. I assumed it was there to catch the rod if the rubber part failed.
I'll take a look at it this afternoon. The wire is mounted on a little tab that looked factory to me. It looks like it has been there for decades, if not the life of the car. |

The part that typically fails is the nylon "ball joint" on the rear side of the component. They turn to powder after 20 or so years and just disappear. Last edited by tangofox007; 08-15-2011 at 01:08 PM. |

I've had the rubber part tear apart too. But it looks like his nylon ball is gone.

Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and ordered the part. Is replacing it pretty straightforward?

One hitch pin. Two screws. Three minutes.

Great. I was hoping you'd say something like that. Thanks again!
