Exclamation Vacuum pump diaphragm replacement questions

I am doing the vacuum pump diaphragm on my 1980 td this weekend. It has the old style, two-outlet pump.

I am extra thick on some things, and obviously this job is going to be one of them.

1. I read that I can do this easily with the pump in place, by just pulling off the front cover. Is this true?

2. Right now I have no vacuum to speak of, but no oil in the vent line either. Should I just go ahead and order the 'big' rebuild kit with the check valve pieces? (Note: I THOUGHT that was what I had bought until I got to the parts counter today. DOH. Should have known it was way too cheap....).

Thanks

Yes you can replace the diaphragm with the pump in place. I did it on my 78 240D. If I remember correctly, you dont even have to take off the fan an belts off if you have the right tools. But it will much be easier with them out of the way. The plate is held on by flat head screws. I found that a flat head driver dip in a socket and ratchet works best.

If you're not getting oil in the vent line than I wouldn't think a new diaphragm will fix the problem. I would suspect the check valve on the pump for the line to the brake booster, or the internals of the pump. Both of which can be replaced. If it were me. I'd pull the pump and to a total rebuild. Then you won't have to mess with it again.

What is there to rebuild on the diaphragm pump besides the diaphragm and the check valves?
Yes, it is easily done without removing the whole pump.

Here is a good video of a early style vacuum pump rebuild.

Thanks. It turned out the diaphragm was fine. Just installed backwards. I put the new one in anyway.

Didn't help. Tranny still won't shift. New thread coming on that....
