1995 E300D 5 Speed Transmission Swap

I have sold my 1987 190D and and still have my 1986 190e that was purchased with the intent of converting the 190D. My daily driver is the 33k 1995 E300D and i am trying to figure out what is required that is not on the 190e for converting the E300D.

What i currently understand:
1. need to get a flywheel from a 300 series because of mag pickup.
2. need longer driveshaft (can i get the front half of a 300??) (would rather bolt on than have to extend)
3. Rear diff should be fine as i think mine is a 3.46 (can someone confirm?)

anyone have any wisdom on this swap? i have searched the forum and have read about the W210 conversion, which i hope is easier on my w124. After the swap I will have the auto trans for sale (only 34k miles on it).

cheers

Hopefully the 606 crank has provision for a pilot bearing.

well my inspiration is coming from forum member Klaus Kallas, who converted his 606 w210 with the trans of a 1984 190e.

Link: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=262974

i am assuming that my 606 is the same.

also, it seems i was a little off, as my E300d has a 2.87 rear diff ratio.

Klaus mentioned this in an earlier thread:

All that was easy enough(relatively), but the one thing that keeps this unrealistic for all but the insane is the flywheel. The automatic uses six cast "tabs" as pick up points for the crank sensor, which these beasts need to run. The manual flywheel has none and is a lot thinner. In a fit of mad genius or lunacy (that fine line we all walk), member Crashone and I cut a very unlucky Craftsman screwdriver into 6 equal lengths. Lots of measuring later, we welded those little suckers to the manual flywheel as pick-up tabs. Damned if it didn't work!!

so assuming that i use the lighter flywheel of the 190e then i would have to weld the mag pickups. However, if i do find and purchase a 103 030 1205 – Single Mass Flywheel from a 300e then it should not be a problem??

this is what I need to know.

thanks

I can answer a few questions since your 95 is a w124 and did a conversion in my 87 300TD. You are going to need a longer drive shaft the front part. The transmission cross member you can buy it new for I think $37.00. I don't think your 606 in your 95 is the same the 95 has a pump like the one in the 603

Magnetic pickups? Diesels don't do magnetic pickups.

I hope you are correct. i would love to just have to buy the flywheel and not have to worry about the tach.

You don't have magnetic pick ups because you have a manual fuel pump and. The 606 in the 97 has magnetic pick ups

Awesome, so that means that i could keep the 190e flywheel (although it being light), a 190d flywheel, or the 300e flywheel.

thanks for the clarification.

trying to see if i can find a driveshaft from a 300e manual. this will be a challenge. anyone know how much it would cost to have my current e300d driveshaft lengthened?

Wow! You've got a 95 e300d with only 33k miles? Oh that's awesome.

ok so i found a 300e driveshaft in germany and it is on its way here. got a good deal as well for 50Euros and 40 Euro for shipping. $135 total.

now i am wondering if i should be shopping for a better differential and speedo cluster. since this is a non turbo, any suggestions on the best rear end ratio to have i am thinking 3.27. T Walgamuth has one from a 190e 16v that he might sell me. any reasons to go higher than 3.27?

also how do i find out what year model had a 3.27 in it, so i can find a cluster that i can use together with the diff. is it possible to just swap out the speedo, and i can leave the rest of my cluster intact?

another big question is about the 5 speed condition. i dont know if this thing is in great shape, and i have never driven the car. i only pushed it off the trailer and pulled it on, although my uncle drove it for 50 miles and said the engine was shot.
How much would it cost to have the manual rebuilt? is that possible to do for a shade tree mech? i dont want to install the trans, only to have to pull it again.

Cheers

Not true. Tach is picked up on starter gear ring. If the car starts you have tach.

You will need to shorten the auto DS assuming its the same as the 603. Also the yoke on the DS will be different size than the trans

Should be 2.6x, but no need to change it.
