617 Head differences between 84-85

Quick questions regarding differences in heads on my 84 and 85 engines.

1. The 84 has the coolant bypass line from the water pump to the head, 85 doesn't. Why is that?

2. The 85 has two temp sensors on the head whereas the 84 only has one. I'm guessing one feeds the EGR computer? So if I want to put my 84 engine in the 85, do I need that temp sensor, even though my EGR is disconnected (for testing purposes)?

1. I dont think that is correct.

2. It is for the EGR computer, you should be OK but may affect KLIMA.

My 85 didn`t come with a coolant py-pass pipe either (does now) and others I have seen in the yards, don`t have it either. maybe the bean counters cutting costs where they can.

Is yours a Kali Kar or a Fed? maybe the Kali`s don`t have it and the Fed`s do???

Thumbs up

My SD is a Federal 1985 MY, 10/84 build, and did not come with that bypass tube either. I have since installed as I assumed something was missing... does not seem to make much difference either way.

More important 1985 MY parts are the more efficient A/C condenser, 2.88:1 diff, larger aux fan, smaller water pump pulley, etc.

It also came with a plastic fan, which I can only surmise was for fuel economy differences over the aluminum unit. The 617 really does not rev high enough to make much difference in peak HP to warrant a plastic fan. Going back to the alu fan in on my 'to do' list when I remember to scoop up a good used unit. Reason being is to pull more air to help with A/C in the summer, I will gladly give up 5hp on the top end for more air volume in the city. In more temperate climates I would not waste my time.

Both engines are fed.

I'll plan on putting in the second temp sensor when the '84 motor goes into the '85 wagon. I don't need to give my Klima any reason to stop working and leave me without A/C.
