I almost had it fixed,until....2.2 190d
Another bump in the road for what usually would be a simple and easy job.A 1984 190d 2.2 with alot of belt noise ,identified the problem as the belt tensioner bracket ,its bolted on to the block with a large bolt that needed the help of a breaker bar ,trying to put the new bracket on and it turns out the water pump pulley is just enough in the way .Question ,is their a way to get the pulley off the water pump without taking the water pump off?

Get the Fan and radiator/condenser out of the way and use a puller. Once all that stuff is out of the way, you sould be able to look straight at it from the front and have access to it.

The steps involved replacing this piece looked easy ,the bracket comes with a bolt that rides in place without removal ,its assembly this way.Im off just enough to send it sideways as I crank the bolt so Im not going to force the piece on.Im going to take the fan off and see if theirs a way to unbolt the pulley ,never done this job but will give some reports on how its done for other folks to read on.

I am not sure on the 2.2 but on the 2.5 you can get the bracket on as long as the pulley isn't attached to the bracket. With the pulley off the tensioner you can rotate the bracket just enough to squeeze it in there.

You dont have to remove the radiator for this. It is possible to remove the waterpump pulley with allen wrenches. Ive done it several times. Takes a while. I use locktite blue on all these nuts especially the big one on the block.

190D belt tensioner bracket replacement . Ok ,its a success ,it took taking off the 4 11mm bolts with a wrench that was holding on the water pump pulley .Tools needed,6mm allen socket ,12mm allen socket ,13,11,and 10mm socket and wrench ,screwdriver.
To start remove the radiator shroud -screwdriver to remove the clips .Then unbolt the tensioner top bolt and take pressure off bolt with leverage on the connection piece ,BLACK PLASTIC PIECE-13mm socket &13mm wrench.Undo belt and unbolt the pulley of the bracket-6mm allen socket. Then you can take the spring tensioner off (no tools here),then go for the shock tensioner-6mm allen socket and 10mm socket.Youll now unbolt the fan -6mm allen socket- then the 4 bolts that hold on the water pump pulley-11mm wrench -make sure not to strip a bolt .The 12mm allen socket is then used to remove the bracket piece ,this requires a breaker bar.Reverse steps exactly and youll have no problems. |

Drove the old 190d around on errands today ,some 60 miles with no belt noise, its nice to hear the radio in this ride now.The brackets bearing was toast ,it had let the belt ride akward due to stress on one side.Cant wait for a planned road trip next month ,its a fun little car to drive around.
