Alternator Bad! How to get it out? w115 300D
It looks like the Alternator isn't charging the battery. The compressor is in the way for a top down take out.
So, the question is, is the alternator made to come out the bottom of the car, if so, it seems awfully tight. What say ye? |

Replace the regulator first.

Unless the alternator is noisy, the regulator is the most common repair.

I just noticed you live up the road, my hometown is Stockton. I think there is something with one the belts, squeaky noise at start up, but then goes away. Not sure if that is the alternator or cold belt components. Anyway will start with the regulator as it easy and cheap to do. |

wait,
if the belts are squeaky, replacement of them would be high on my list. an alt with a bad regulator would not load the belts and cause a squeak. the alt adjuster is pretty simple on those cars too. try tightening the belt first, then measure the voltage with the car running.

I just had this job done
I just had this job done on my W124 300d.
My mechanic, who is smarter than I with car repairs, took my serpentine belt off, spun the wheels of all those items the serpentine belt turns, to find out which was making the screeching noise, and it was the alternator. So he replaced it. Problem solved. So, if yours is squealing and you can easily LOOSEN your belt (I don't think you have a serpentine belt on yours), do so, spin it by hand to see if it's causing a problem. Maybe that will work for your situation. You can get rebuilt Bosch ones on ebay for $100. jeff |

Trust me, you have a loose belt. Be aware that once a belt squeals, it becomes glazed quickly and can still make noise tightened. You could have 2 problems but you need to diagnose this in a logical order. Tighten the belt and load test the alternator. And be prepared to replace the belt.

If it is in fact bad you are required to remove the front sway bar to allow removal of the alternator on the stroke 8 models.
