OM617 - Tip on draining coolant from the block

After getting splashed in the face with coolant the other night, I realized that I had never seen any good tips on draining the block other than where the bolt is and what tools to use.

1. Follow the DIY: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OM617BlockDrainPlug BUT WAIT!
2. The bolt is very short, so just loosen it and get out from under the car.
3. Back up topside, reach your left arm down and around the turbo and start feeling the block for the drain bolt.
4. Remove and let drain into a catch pan. Remove hoses per DIY to get full flow.
5. Replace in reverse. snug the bolt up from the topside, then get under the car and tighten per FSM.

I was thinking I might stick on a bit of solid pipe on mine - effectively moving the drain plug to a lower more easily accessible point. That would then enable you to more effectively guide the draining fluid into a container rather than all over the suspension parts and exhaust underneath...

...but then I thought - oh bugger how often will I do this job...

...then I thought - but yeah it would be snazzy...

just don't forget to replace the aluminum washer on the bolt!

I have one of these mixing pans from Home Depot

Set under the car, and open the plug, they work great. think they come in 3 sizes.

When I pulled the side plug, I don`t remember getting wet doing it.

The problem for me was, I didn't realize how short the bolt was. Thinking I still had thread left, I proceeded to back it out a bit the BLAHHH, all over the face.

Just leave the cap tight on the overflow bottle. It helped a lot.

The bigger issue is having the right pan. It drops from the entire width of the crossmember, the engine mount arms, the transmission, etc.
