New Tow rig to play with. Non MB...

Well, In my ever growing need of more diesels, a sickness I seems to have caught when buys MB #1, I picked up yet another.

It's a real beater, 250k on it needs tires, brakes, had some valve cover gaskets (A new set already sitting in the truck).

I've beed reading how slow these are etc... but honestly, after the MB's it seems fast to me lol. It will sit you back in the seat, has a ton of power, and will allow me to be able to go and get other MB's as I find them...

It's a 1989 Ford F250, with the International 7.3 and an Automatic.

Everything works, has a tow package with brakes etc, even a CB... have not seen one of those in years... And cruise control... oh how I've missed that...

On a lucky note, it turns out there is a guy parting out a 90 and a 91 30 miles from me, and has everything I would need to fix the truck up, including the tires.

For 1100 bucks I figured I really couldn't go to wrong..

I pick it up the beginning of the week.

the gearing in the vehicle gives great unloaded acceleration from the line, but the lack of turbo gives you poor hauling power at speed... my 89 car hauler has the same IDI 7.3 in it, and I am totally amazed at the first and second gear power the truck has (I've got 6:56 gears and a granny gear 1st if I need it) but above 45mph with two vehicles and tools on the truck, lets just say I don't pass many cars...

Thats an F350 not a 250 which is even better! If you keep oil and water in it, it will last a long time. I have a fleet of them and while the IDI is not the most powerful engine they have way less problems than the computer controlled powerstrokes, and when they do you can usually repair them in the field cheaply. The weak point is the Auto trans. Is it a C6 or an overdrive unit? They had both in 89.

There was a cheap one for sale here locally, it had the Banks(?) turbo kit on it. Looked pretty good too.

Now all you need is a stack

Not sure which trans is in it yet. Guy selling it said it was a F250 Title says F350... So I don't think he knows much about it. It's new to me also. I was surprised at how fast I was at 70 with it... Course it's so damn big it hardly felt like it was moving!

I told my wife I should paint it yellow and have my own personal short bus... (After the timing and busting of the cam shaft debacle I deserve one)

The C6 is a three-speed. If your shift quadrant is "P, R, N, D-in-an-oval, D, 1", you have the mechanical overdrive transmission. If you have an overdrive lockout switch on the shift lever, you have the electronic overdrive transmission. If you have no switch and a "P,R,N,D,2,1" quadrant, you have a three-speed.

The overdrive brake band is known to be weak; many people recommend not towing in overdrive. Fluid and filter changes every 45K are a good idea to prolong the life of the trans.

My dads got an 88 F350 with the 7.3 with the banks kit and the 5 speed manual... that truck is the best tow rig I've ever driven. It out towed a 2001 F350 V10 truck... made it look like it was standing still.

Problems my dad has had with it have been primarily transmission related. back when I was young and we took the 5th wheel on family trips he killed 2 transmissions by running down the freeway at 70+mph. When he started to let me drive it he told me the #1 rule was to watch the boost gauge and if you started to boost more then 5 psi in 5th you should slow down and put it in 4th... 5th was just weak. I know none of this is important because you have the auto... and no boost but what ever.

These guys have some fun parts for the old ford.

Your truck has a 4 speed auto. The last year for the three speed C6 was '87 (mine). Oilberners.net is T H E place for the old IDI Fords. Seriously. No other. As Peach is to MB diesels, oilburners is to IDI ford (international).

Thats a nice looking truck... Funny how when you don't own something you tend not to noticed them. Once you do, you see them everywhere...

Yup, I do know that the truck has an overdrive button. The guy parting has a 5 speed
