sounds like frogs 1980 300d

just converted my 240d to 300d and the engine is starting to sound like frogs under heavy load. then when i get up to speed, they are quiet. the motor has been out of service for 10years. the guy that i purchased the engine from put a new timing chain on it b4 going out of service. could this just be a valve adjustment issue?

Can you take another shot at describing the symptoms?

It's a little hard to relate "sound like frogs" to a diesel engine

well, i'm gonna look at the motor mounts later today and see if that's the problem. seems that every time i'm accelerating, the "frog sound" comes out. i'm hoping it's the fan hitting the shroud.

Can you make a video (with sound) of your frog sounds?

As best as I can recall what frogs sound like -- we urban dwellers are at a bit of a disadvantage there -- it would seem to be a non-mechanical sound.

However, from memory of my last SD, which was a complete POS which made a new sound each week, I can imagine a belt, a squeeking pulley, a power steering pump (either low on oil or on the way out), internal noise from an alternator, or yes, a fan rubbing against the shroud.

Is this a transient or momentary sound when you put the car under load, or does it sound off the whole time?

half the time it sounds mechanical and sometimes like there is something vibrating. it mainly happens it starts when taking off, then goes away -and then comes back on the high end. but not all the time. i need to figure out how to do a valve job. i use to set the valves on a VW Thing years ago. i've never pulled the valve cover on a benz before and have no idea what i'm getting into.

I think you need to separate your need to do a valve adjustment from the need to troubleshoot this noise. I would be hugely surprised if they are related (directly).

The valve adjustment won't be hard if you have done similar work before. It will be MUCH easier if you buy the correct Hazet wrenches (offset shape) but it can be done with regular wrenches if needs be. The Hazet wrenches can usually be found on eBay.

Just get a valve cover gasket and read up on the procedure. There are threads here, or go to the DieselGiant site and look at their DIY pictorial.

OK frogs = whirring then?

In which case it is quite probable that something that spins is touch something that doesn't!

that's what it sounds like, but in rhythm with my idle. louder at the low and high ends. how rigid should the motor mounts be? the engine has some side to side roll when revving it up.

In my experience motor mounts is such a cheap and easy thing to do it should just one of the little thing done when you buy one of these car regardless. Then you know they are good. The difference a new set makes is simply amazing.
