Looking at a 1984 SD

I have a line on an '84 w126. I have not seen it yet. I do not know the miles on it yet. I will be leaving here in about 30 minutes to check it out.

Here is what I was told...It is either silver or grey. The clear coat is shot. It will not start. It was garage kept and now is under a car port. I was told the car got overheated "a little" while driving. He said the car ran after the over heat issue, and when he parked it and let it sit a "few" months, it would not start. He says someone looked at the glow plug system, and appears to be in working order. He thinks it blew a head gasket. I'm hoping for a failed t-stat. The A/C is supposed to be charged w/R-12.

He wants $350 for it, as that is what a wrecking yard offered. The state inspection is out, but the licensing is current.

We shall see...If it's fixable, I'll keep it. If not, I may just buy it as a parts car so I can get the front brake parts for my w123, and part it out.

... it's worth about 390 at the scrap yard. should be worth repairing if there is not much rust.

Just got back. The interior was shot. Basically it would need a complete interior restoration.

ODO had 299412 on it. The car belongs to an older guy, and the oil level was fine. The air cleaner needs new rubber mounts. The air filter was pretty clean, and no oil in it.

Tranny fluid was bright red and did not smell burnt. I found the cause of the over heat...clutch fan locked up, and the waterpump has lateral play, allowing the coolant to be pumped out. The system was not dry, though. Also, no fuel in the system. Hood pad was missing, and the paint on the hood was shot in the area where the hood pad should be.

All the glass was good, no chips, no delamination on the back glass. The body was straight, and needed paint on the sun roof and hood. NO RUST!!!!! Doors opened and closed like a new car.

He did say that if he knew how to get it running again, he would rather keep it. Since he is retired, and a Navy Vet, I offered to help him get it going again.
