Timing washer missing from cam
I recently did a valve adjustment on a freinds 81 300TD. I noticed the washer on the front of the cam that has the timing mark was missing. This allowed the cam to back and forht a little because the washer wasn't there to take up the space.
Not having it to check timing isn't that big of a deal. I just wonder if the washer missing is going to cause any problems down the road?

It can eat the cam tower front face without it. Part number should be Spacer washer MB# 1860520152 $10.00 I suspect that many members have a good used one in spare parts. .

on the cam face - and just think about the lobes on the camshaft not fitting on top of the cam followers. Take a look at how an excessively fussy person views that problem here http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/292821-om617-rocker-arm-problem.html Also imagine how the timing chain would cope if (and only if - it might not happen) the camshaft cog shuttled back and forth... I wouldn't start the engine until the washer is in place (and the rest of the valve gear has been examined for damage). But then again I'm fussy like that.

Thanks for all the advice. The owner of the car said it had been overheated and had the head rebuilt before he bought it. The washer must have been one of the extra parts left over from the rebuild. Kinda makes me wonder what else he got wrong?
I have an extra washer from one of my parts cars. I'll make sure and get one on for him.
