Why are 300TDs so expensive?

I mainly notice this with the W123s, but W124 300TDs dont really exist here. It seems like (as far as price) 1 W123 300TD equals 2-3 300Ds or 3-4 300SDs. Were the production numbers really that much lower?

According to Wikipedia, there were 2,397,514 W123 sedans built and only 199,517 wagons. So neither is really a "rare car," but wagons are about ten times rarer than sedans. Combine this with the practicality of the wagon and it's not surprising they go for more money.

A wagon with working SLS and a 3rd row seat seems to be the Holy Grail for a lot of folks.

Not that unusual actually.

Same thing applies for wagon versions of the Honda Accord, VW Golf, old Volvo models.

Maybe not so extreme as what the really nice 300TDs fetch, however. But some people will certainly pay top dollar for a really, really nice Volvo 245 (not many around).

Station wagons that have good cargo capacity/practicality versus their overall size and fuel consumption are always in demand.

There was a time before minivans roamed the earth, that wagons RULED

Ever tried to put a washing machine in the trunk of a 300SD?

Wagons are FAR MORE desirable because they are better in every way they are different from sedans and there are fewer of them.

Yeah, I think the utility is a big part of it. It just seems weird than $3500 will buy pretty much the best 300SD you can find, or a dented and rusty 300TD with a WVO conversion and sagging rear suspension. Pretty much every one that comes up for sale has been run on WVO too. The reason i was looking at them is after I got my 300SD for $2300 my dad was thinking about getting a 300TD to replace his subaru, but it would be $6k or so to get one in the same shape as my car.

Theres a very shiney white E320 wagon near my house, that guy has put heavy stuff in his car yet the SLS picks it up. Just for that alone I'll get one, its like a practical small van.

Wagons always hold their value better than a sedan, it seems.

Keep in mind the wagons sold at a premium when new, too. I don't know the relative prices for Mercedes cars, but in the case of American cars the station wagon was often the most expensive car in a particular model range, often even more expensive than the convertible...

The 300TD is just such a cool ride, and unlike most wagons, they actually drive as well or better than their sedan counterparts. I know that since I got my 300TD at the beginning of the year, I have not driven my Ford Ranger or my Lincoln Town Car more than a couple times each. I just love the old TD and really enjoy driving it.

I was amazed at the offers I get from people for my wagon when I am on the road. I get asked at least 4-5 times a week if I want to sell it. Deals can still be found on TD's but you really got to be fast with the cash...........

I looked for 8 years to find a good TD cheap, and I finally found one 10 miles from my house!
