Question Flame method for cleaning intake...

Anyone do this for their benz?

I cant find a shop that has a hot tank and am pondering doing this cleaning "procedure":

(minus the cold water dunk at the end)

I would pressure wash it WAY before I'd try that.

Pressure washing takes a lot longer, and makes more of a mess. The gook that forms in TDI intakes is like consecrated blackness. Way worse than anything an old MB does.

Several years ago someone used Foaming type Oven Cleaner followed by a pressure wash at one of those places where you wash your Car/Truck yourself.

How bad is it?

I've been using Eastwood's undergone to remove an additional tar based undercoat on the bottom of my car... pretty good stuff on that (doesn't help with the MB rubber stuff though => http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/2794248-post44.html)

I get the impression it is more effective than oven cleaner...

You could be entirely correct about the Eastwood stuff.

When I cleand mine I just used Engine Degreaser (followed by Water Hosing out) and a brush and just kept repeating that. So that is my limited experience with it.

What I have read of other member doing; safe or not.

Foaming Oven Cleaner
Soak in Bio Diesel
Soak in Galoline
Soak in Diesel fuel
Soak in Solvent
Many applications of Engine Degreaser

People do say not to leave the Oven Cleaner on Aluminum Parts for too long.

Maybe follow up with a Sandblaster after all of that?

Looks good to me

Who wouldn't want to get involved with flame and smoke. You can't hot tank aluminium as the caustic solution will eat the manifold. Other hydrocarbon or harsh chemicals just can't beat the simplicity of a propane torch. Cheers Dan

Last night I was doing this project, and here is a thread on it.

I decided I better get some of my greasy parts I have been dragging home from PNP degreased and put away before the winter rains arrive. so went down to where I use to work and used their Hot water high pressure washer/ steam cleaner.

You will get wet from water and gunk splashing back, so wear safety glasses/goggles/face shield, rubber boots and rain gear. I also use ear plugs mainly because of the noisy machine.

Did a 5 spd manual trans, engine adapter plate, old 240D bell housing and 2 intake manifolds.

One manifold was off a 78 300SD W116 w/o the EGR. so this one only had some oil residue from the blow by and cleaned up pretty good on the inside. I stuck the wand in each hole and blasted the water in. have to hold it down with your foot or it will shoot across the concrete.

second manifold came off a 82 300SD W126. this one was filled with the thick gunk from the blow by and the soot from the EGR. I really had the gunk flying out of the holes 5 - 6 ft. you will get some of this crap blown back towards you.

I was checking the parts this morning, and still see some places I missed.

hmmm.

i tried the flame method...it's fun. my air compressor was malfunctioning so i wasn't able to get a nice sustained burn on it for more than 30 seconds.

it still got a ton of crap out.

either way, i think a power wash is still needed. i was hoping to avoid a black water shower :-/

I got spotless results leaving the crossover tube in a can of carburetor cleaner overnight, then flipping it over. TOTALLY spotless, zero elbow grease.
I bet a 5 gallon can would be perfect for intake manifold...
this is the dip, NOT the spray...

Are you speaking of Carburetor Dip or Carburetor Cleaner?

I do not know if the formula for carburetor Dip is the same as it was in the past; but, back in the 70s if you left Aluminum in Carburetor Dip overnight it discolored it badly.

yeah, DIP.
it's certainly a different formula. the new stuff is very pleasant to work with. no discoloration at all either.
