W123 Cruise Control Will Not Shut Off

I would like to run this situation by everyone to try to prevent more money waste.

I purchased a "rebuilt" Programa amplifier to fix non working cruise control. It worked perfectly for two months. Then one day on the highway I could not turn it off by the switch and was forced to brake, pull over and shut the car off. I ordered a replacement amplifier (under warranty) thinking the first was defective. I did not solve the problem. I then ordered a rebuilt (Programa again) actuator. Problem still not solved. The cruise control only quits when one holds the switch in the off position. Otherwise it goes back to the set speed. Very scary! I called GDL regarding the symptoms and was advised to replace the amplifier again. Does this sound like two bad amplifiers or perhaps a bad stalk switch? My throttle linkages seem fine. 1984 300D.

From what I gather, in the amplifier schematics, there is a problem in the amplifier. There is a K1 relay that unlatches whenever cancel is selected or the brake switch is engaged. Either this relay is failed or there is even the possibility of a part snafu.

On the second amp, holding the switch to off causing the cruise to cruise to quit, pretty much says the stalk switch is working. Without going into a lot of detail, the amp is just acting like Decelerate "electronically" rather than Cancel.

I sometimes wonder if, in cases of perplexing cruise control weirdness, it's worth the hour of labor the dealer would charge to evaluate the system using their diagnostic tool. Then you'd know for sure.

They can be frustrating trying to get them to work. A shop replaced the actuator one time and it was working ok. then it gets to surging, shut off or suddenly the engine will speed up. not sure is the amp was changed or not. did replace the broken stauk one time.

when I replaced the engine last time, I left the actuator off.

There are a couple after market cruise controls that some of the guys have used with success.

Make sure throttle linkage is well lubricated....that will also cause cruise problems.
