Question Is my fuel gauge sender toast?

I cracked open the fuel gauge sender on my '81 300TD today because my fuel gauge doesn't work anymore. Based on other posts, I was expecting lots of crud, maybe some algae. But mine came out in 2 parts:

Are there any other parts that are missing?
Will it work if I put it back together or do I need a new one?

Looks like you'll need a replacement. There should be three wires running the length of the sender on the side with the float. Looks like you have no wires. And if it came out in pieces then it's probably toast.

Craptastic. I was able to get the reserve light on by jumping the terminals, so I know the gauge is still communicating. You're right, there were no wires whatsoever in there.

Used ones can work well, but a used wagon sender is going to be hard to find. I think there are a couple folks parting wagons in the parts forum. Otherwise you'll have to buy new.

there a nut that screws the 2 parts together on the bottom of the tube. If
it fell off, then the 2 parts were banging together and broke the wires.

Here is another thread of the same issue from yesterday
