Baja lights on the 116

I picked up a relay but I'm not sure how I'm going to wire them. I was thinking about having them on with the hi beams...

If they are driving light pattern use them with your high beams.

If they are fog light pattern then use them with your park+low beams.

These are the lights:

Buy Blazer Chrome Off-Road Halogen Baja Light 100 Watt (1 Bulb) C52CW at Advance Auto Parts

I guess they are spot light beams. They throw a circle of light with little diffusion. I wired them to come on with the hi-beams and aligned them to supplement the hi's.

I went ahead and installed a new battery with the lights. The old one was from '06

Did you upgrade the alternator? Those lights are another 15 amp load and my guess is a 116 SD has no more than a 50 amp alternator.

I loved the Hella spotlights I had on my Audi... those plus Euro lights made night driving a pleasure.

It did have a 110 amp alternator, however.

I think the 116 SDs have either 55 or 65 amp alternators. Not much. I'm hoping that these lights and the 16 amp aux fan won't cause problems.

I do a lot of early morning driving through deer country.

compu-85, what's the story on the Audi paint? I dig it

You could wire them into the rear facing fog lamp position on your main switch I believe.

My switch pulls out for fogs but there is another detent beyond it. The knob pulls out in 2 clicks. Is that the rear fog position?

Yes. The first click if front fogs, the second was meant for the rear fog lamp

Cool! Do you know if the fronts stay on when the knob is all the way out?

I put a 10 amp inline fuse on the lights and it seems to be working fine. They do put off a lot of heat though.

Yes the front fogs are on with the switch in the second position. But at least you could use your high and low beams as well as fog lights without your new lights on while driving.

Don't the fog lights cut out when you turn on the high beams on US spec cars? Of that vintage, anyway.

They do. I'll check and see if the rear fog does the same thing. I don't see why it would There is a law about not having more than 4 front facing lights on at a time

Low beams:

There's a simple mod you can do, I read about it here in the forums somewhere that allows you to have the high-beams as well as the front fogs on at once.
