Maybe Germans can get along and help each company.Where here the Big Three fight and hide.

I was watching a thing on the History Channel a couple weeks ago about BMW, and apparently BMW was a few hours away from being bought out my Mercedes many years ago. I thought it was funny.

Smoky, stinky noisy clattery old Diesels is the image most americans think when the mention of a Diesel powered car is mentioned.

Funny you mention MB almost bought BMW, and now the MB Forum is bought by a BMW Forum.

Allthough we know our old diesels aren't nearly that bad (and are quite smooth and smoke free when tuned properly) it's a good add, the new stuff really is head and shoulders above our 1970s tech cars.

Something missing

They don't have a 524TD in the commercial. Interesting omission. Cheers Dan

Here is a VW commercial where they compare the emission from a 115 MB diesel and a new Toureg diesel. I found it odd that they didn't use a VW diesel from the same era.

Ya. Plus I don't think it's fair to compare the exhaust emissions of a 1975 car to a 2011 one. Heck if you put the paper over the tailpipe of a 1975 gasser it would probably still turn black!

That's how my wife sees my 300D. Although it doesn't smoke like the ones in the commercial it is "clacky" and "loud" to her.

rscurtis 09-27-2011 05:56 PM

I once saw a Volvo wagon that smoked like the one in the commercial.

Some people just don't know how to keep their car maintained.

Give that new BMW a few years of poor maintenance and see how much she smokes if she runs at all.

HuskyMan 09-28-2011 08:01 AM

apparently there is a long standing feud between BMW and Mercedes; they have slammed one another in the past and probably will in the future. In reality, they are two different car companies with two different lines of products. I'd like to see a BMW go 30+ years with the low maintenance costs I've experienced with the 300D. Plus, in an accident which of the two cars would you rather be in? The 300D is built like the proverbial tank and I know for a fact the mass of the diesel engine will help protect the occupants in the event of a head on collision.

The engine will be dead by then. Bimmers are notorious for that after the 1970s. The ones earlier wqere superbly engineered and well assembled, but not so much these days.

I base that on having owned and serviced them. Not anecdotes.

I recall reading about when Mercedes bought the defunkt Bremen Borgward plant in the early '60s. With the purchase, they acquired a warehouse full of Borgward spare-parts. So a large pit was dug, the parts were bulldozed in, and then concreted over!

Happy Motoring, Mark
