Turbo Drain Leak

Those of you who have used Hi Temp Silicone or JB Weld instead of replacing the Turbocharger drain and seal/grommet, I was wondering how the "quick fix" has held up over the course of time? for example; http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/113087-w126-om617-1985-300sd-turbo-drain-tube-gasket-seals-3.html

I just replaced the tube after living with a leak for a few years.
It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Especially, on
a 126 like we have--there's more room to get around in there.
It's been a couple of weeks and the leak has been fixed.

Whatever you do, don't JB weld it. You'll be married to it for life!
No advice on the silicone. The worst part, for me, was getting the
old tube out. I ended up clamping a chain onto the tube with vice grips
and pulling it up and out using leverage.

To insert the new tube I slid the grommet halfway up the tube,
shoved it down into the oil pan seating the grommet and then pulled
the tube up into the newly re-attached upper tube. The grommet will
come out a bit, just used a stick of wood to push down and re-seat the grommet.
Really wasn't too bad of a job.

Jeff

I posted pics somewhere. Order the parts, do it right & be done. I easily pulled the turbo. The gasket kit was ~ $60. Grommets went in easily using long 3/8 ratchet extensions. It will be nice to have a clean(er) engine bay.

I haven`t done the job either. I replaced mine with a new engine from Metric Motors, but that is kind of a pricy way to go for sure.

here are a couple of the DIY articles from the Resources section.

I have see where some of the guys have posted the silicone (RTV) method.
Now just have to wait until one of them come online.

On mine the previous owner had smeared Silicon Sealant around the lower End of the Turbo Drain.

After about 3 years of the leak gradually increasing I finally decided to do the replacement job.

One of the keys to getting Silicone Sealant to do the job is to degrease the areas so that the Silicon can stick. If the sealant does not stick there us always a chance of Oil leaking between the sealant and the Parts.
